Have you been trying to get an appointment since you had the scan or were you just told they would contact you if need be, and they've taken all this time to get back to you?  After you've had your meeting get back to this forum before you agree to take any osteoporosis medications!

Hi Jacky, you have waited three months, which is unbelievably disgraceful so don't panic, you are very patient aren't you?. The dexa scan measures bone density so the worst will show you have osteoporosis.  You may well be offered medication such as Fosamax or something along those lines so might be worth reading up about medication before you go to see the doctor as knowing about side effects can be very useful.  If you do have osteoporosis then I think the hardest thing is coming to terms with not beingable to do things you used to be able to do.  You have to learn how to get round doing things! there is also the osteoporosis society which is worth looking at.  Advice, don't panic there are worse things. As Anhaga said, if you do have it come back on here and see what people say. Good luck.

The best advice I can give is to ask for a copy of your results.  I got a chart that gave the level where treatment was advised and I was below that level, despit the GP giving me medication! But if you've got a copy of your results you know exactly where you are with it and can make your own decisions:-))))

I had an unexpected diagnosis of osteoporosis and am adamant that I will not take any of the medications on offer.  Thing is, there are natural alternatives which have been shown to work, and besides I would rather have my bones, even if they are "thinning", than run the risk of any of the side effects from the OP medications.  I've done a lot of reading and am developing what I think is going to be an effective self management of my osteoporosis, although time (and a new scan in about ten months) will tell!  The protocal involves judicious use of supplements and appropriate exercise.  Even if you have been diagnosed with osteopenia you may be offered the medications, but as Faith says, you should read up on them before agreeing to take any of them.  Bones change slowly so there's no panic to start anything instantly.  I'll be more than happy to share what I have been learning.

Would be very interested to know your secrets. Have reacted to Actonel and now Denosumab it would be good to have natural things.

Faith, I will take some time to send you a private message.  I'm going offline for a few hours, but will send you some information later today.  I'm in Atlantic time zone so you may see it tomorrow, depending where you are!  The problem is that Patient is very picky, understandably, about what we are allowed to post in terms of so-called alternative treatments, and I don't just want to list the things I'm doing without proper explanations.  Talk to you later!

Hi Kippy, I've sent you a private message.  Please note that I'm only sending you the compilation from my own reading.  I don't pretend to offer medical advice.  But some people have found the info I've gathered helpful.  I hope you do too!
