Need advice on Orlistat please?

Hello,

I am brand new to all of this so I apologise if I'm posting in the wrong place.

I'm in my 20s, I am about 5ft 3 and weigh 13stone 7lb. (86kg). I have always been big, except when I was pregnant with my only daughter I lost 4stone during the pregnancy due to illness. I soon put it back on and crept back to 13stone 7 within a year or two.

I have a job that involves me being on my feet all day so I am active in that sense and I have tried every diet going. I went to the doctors for the first time and he quickly gave me these orlistat tablets. He told me if I eat too much fat that I will be going to the toilet more than normal and that's about it. I'm not sure what I can and cannot eat. I know I need to take the tablets 3 times a day with every meal but not really sure what I should be avoiding, if anything.

I am excited at being given something that might finally fix my weight issue as it is truly making me miserable, however, I am a bit scared of doing it wrong. I would really appreciate any advice people can give me to get the best results, and your experiences with the tablets.

Thank you!

The general rule is that everything you eat should contain not more than 5g of total fat per 100g, and not more than 15g in any one meal. The tablets work by getting rid of the fat you eat, so if you have more they can't cope. Use an app like My Fitness Pal and put down everything you eat. It works out the fat and other nutrients for you.  You must remember that you have to do the work, the tablets aren't magic, but they will give you a boost especially at first. My advice is to eat what you normally eat but change it, if you see what I mean. If you totally change your way of eating to things you don't like, you won't be able to keep it up! If you like toast for breakfast, have it without butter (you get used to it). If you like cereal, check the back of the packet and check the fat content and weigh it out;.that's really important for things like cereal where it's easy to be a bit over generous!  Drink lots and lots of water because that helps things flush through. I cook a lot of fish, done in lemon juice in the oven or grilled without fwt. I use Fry Light for stir fry dishes (excellent stuff). I have got inventive with salads and sandwiches without butter. You get quickly into the swing of it and now if we eat out I know instinctively what I can and can't have. No biscuits, no cakes, no cream! Sadly no cheese:-(. I eat a lot of pasta, rice, couscous, potatoes and they are filling. Sometimes if I'm cooking pasta I put half a teaspoon of Parmesan on mine as a treat:-). I also eat masses of fruit, at least one piece with every meal, and sometimes buy special fruit as a treat. For Christmas I will cook my roast potatoes and roast parsnips in Fry Light and am having a special sorbet in place of Christmas Pudding. Today I am ecstatic because I have now lost 4 stone since I started in March, so it can be done.  Good luck. Remember, the best diet is determination and the words "no thank you".

hi rachael, well i started the tables nearly a month ago and i have lost 15ibs so far.  you will learn very quickly what items have fat in them.  the rule i stick to is no more than 15g of fat per large meal, if you do eat some items ie. pizza, pasta etc there can be a side effect of fatty stools.  which isnt the nicest,  i also drink approx 3 litres of water per day.
