Yes, quite a few cannot contine working, or are unfit for work as a result of COPD.  On the other hand there are some in severe stage COPD who continue to work for a time before they pass.  Some people think that if they stop working that is when problems will start.

It all depends how the individual can manage and cope with working and the possible added risk of additional exposure to colds, flu, viruses that occur in the work place during the winter months, shared air space, poor ventilation, no clean air filters etc.  increases the risk of lung infection which can if not treated quickly enough can result in further lung damage, weakend lungs are more vulnerable to infection, more infection means more lung damage means more risk to lung health and health generally.

But a diagnosis and advice from your doctor or specialist may be able to guide you better since they will know your actual lung problem and what the risks are to you and if you are ok to continue working.

Vee2 pretty well said it all.  I was working up to Dec/16 and got a cold.  In Jan I was too weak to go back to work.   I started rehad in Nov/Dec/16 and discovered that my profession was one of the worst (Kindergarten Teacher's Assistant).  Every year I had a cold and now learned this was creating damage to my lungs.  My Dr.'s ie.GP and respir. didn't reallly advocate working or not working.  I was getting weaker and realized I should spend my energy working on diet, exercise and exploring other options.  I asked my GP to support me in my application for disability.  It has been approved and I started in July/17.  I have worked all my life (I am 61 yrs. old) and it is very hard to get used to being retired particularly with all the constraints this disease has.  If you suffer from anxiety/and or depression, this is another problem on top of the COPD.  I learned all my information from rehad and the internet ie. not my doctors.  I suggest you try to look at a rehad facility and talk to the patients and then make an informed decision.  Every one is different and every person is at a different stage.
