Need help, if possible:

I know this isn't the place to do this, but I would like to ask just to make sure I actually need to see someone. I am a twenty year old female. I started having (what I thought was Tinnitus) ringing in both of my ears. It is a constant every day ringing that gets louder and louder. When I say ringing i mean it sounds like someone is screaming in my ear and it gets louder from there. This problem has been going for at least four years. About a year ago I started noticing my hearing would just stop in one ear and go for several hours. It is never in both ears but it occasionally switches from one ear to the other ear. I have get vertigo or dizziness when it happens. I have to lie down. If I don't lie down I will walk into walls, walk at an angle, or even fall over. I makes my head hurt like no other headache I have had before and that is usually when I get nauseous. I normally throw up each time (with the headaches). What are my chances of Meniere's Disease? I go to the hospital quite frequently but they never check my ears they just do blood work. No one can figure out what is causing this. Thank you in advance.

    Hi,

I hope it is not menieres. You should go to a specialist, ear, nose , throat. As there are many other things that could be going on. Meniers usually starts with a fullness in one ear followed by tinnitus and vertigo. Following can be slight hearing loss and then occasional fullness, vertigo. I've had it for 20 yrs and have experienced it all. Best to get a diagnosis; MRI, audiology, and blood tests to rule all other things out.

    Wish you luck

Hi Maddie I suffer with that Tinnitus on a daily basis and know what you mean about the screaming, mine gets louder and louder as well and can also last for hours. I was firstly diagnosed back in February this year with Menieres as I to had vertigo, dizziness and sickness making me unstable to walk, in April they weren't sure if it was Menieres and said it quite possibly could be Auto Immune Disease as I no longer had vertigo, dizziness or sickness. I only have hearing in one ear which makes it harder for me as sometimes the tinnitus gets so loud that it completely blocks off all my hearing ability. The consultant told me that the ringing or humming in my case actually comes from the head although you think it is in the ear. He said that once you have it, then unfortunately you have it for life. He said that it does calm down but takes time but never goes away. I have been issued with a hearing aid which helps if the humming is not too loud, but if it is loud, then its completely useless. I ended up being off work for 6 months, and although I've returned, I still get days when I have to work from home as the hearing is at a level where I can't hear anything. I wish you luck and hope that you eventually get a firm diagnosis.

Definitely see a good ENT if you have a teaching hospital around, even better. There are things called vestibular migraines which some doctors have said I have. No one knows a hundred percent but sometimes specific migraine drugs help as opposed to more typical menieres therapies. You are young and if you have had a history of migraines definitely talk to a specialist about this. Best of luck to you. Whatever it is, it's a godawful thing you're going through but don't feel helpless. IT will require work on your part and self advocating until you find someone who listens to you and helps you.

Hi Maddie, I've had MD for 21 years, the one thing you mentioned that I don't think you should ignore is that you said you get severe headaches. I have had some light to moderate headaches, but that is usually after a vertigo episode. You definitely need to see an ENT doctor, and get an MRI of your brain done. The big problem with MD is to diagnose it you have to rule out everything else. Best of luck to you.
