Need help...not sure if Zoloft is right for me

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have been suffering for some years during the winter time with anxiety and depression.  I have been on and off meds for 4 years now.  I always seem to have to go back on them when the winter comes.  I would stay on them, but I was trying to get pregnant so I went off.   Well its been a tough time for me lately and decided to put trying on hold to help myself.  I started 50mgs of zoloft 13 days ago.  Haven't really felt any relief...my therapist says I should feel better after 2 and maybe meds aren't right for me.  I kind of think I need to wait at least up to 4 weeks.  I have terrible anxiety all day with physical symptoms.  I push through my day because its the right thing to do.  I eat, workout, go to work, but just not enjoying it because I feel "weird".  Hoping I will feel better soon....this worrying about worrying is starting to make me mad!! Help anyone else have a similar story or hope?

    Hi Amanda,

Winter can often be a difficult time as there is so little daylight. Daylight triggers the production of seratonin in the brain, so obviously less is produced during the darker months. It's a struggle for lots of people.

You are doing the right thing by keeping up your exercise. It's a great mood enhancer. Have you tried an energy light? I find it really helps to wake me up in the mornings and I feel much brighter as a result.

Stick with your medication. It takes 4-6 weeks to properly balance out. 2 weeks isn't long enough. I find it helps to think about that magic moment, the day when you wake up and you're smiling, it's a wonderful, peaceful feeling. The heart racing anxiety and feeling off just wanting to pull the covers back over your head will go. Just be patient.

I hope things improve for you x

I know exactly how you feel. I'm very impatient too, and when you're a thinker (which I suspect you are too) analysis of every thought and feeling goes into overdrive. All you want is to be better. Jyst try to keep focussing on how you want to feel and know they each day, you are another day closer to feeling that way. Let me know how the medication goes for you. Just keep doing what you are doing and maybe once in a while just take a step back and time out. Me I have learnt after many years of anxiety stress worries depression no matter what tablets I take everyone needs that time out even if it's only visiting a friend or a 5 minute walk it does help honest hope u feel better soon

Hi Amanda my doctor says Sertraline can take 6-8 weeks to kick  in. I'm on week 5 now. At 1st my symptoms were worse. I was so worried. My anxiety was terrible and I was crying all the time. I have to admit tho this week I don't feel quite as bad. Don't get me wrong, I'm not 100% far from it. But I'd say 10% better. I'm sticking with the tablets as I just want to get better. I have 2 children and its almost xmas so am doing my best. I'm waiting to have Congnitive Behavioural Therapy which I've heard is excellent. I'm also reading self help books. Like you I get worse in the winter. My doctor mentioned it could also be a bit of SAD (seasonal disorder). Are you worse in the mornings? I'm going to look into this as there are special lights you can buy. Stick with the tablets tho. They take a lot longer than a few days. Hope some of this helps and you feel a bit better soon.  xxx

Agree with Shed1976 about being a "thinker" and anxiety and impatience. I'm in same boat and have found that scheduling a mid-day 15 minutes of quiet relaxation/meditation, and listening to guided meditation in the evening before bed really helps to force you to slow down your mind. Look for "the honest guys" on youtube for some good examples. While waiting for meds to stabilize after dose changes up/down I've also found this to be helpful. take care smile

So here is an update on my status....16 days in.....felt great past 2 days.....but there is still something wrong and cant put my finger on it.   Then I start to worry if meds are working or if they are making me feel worse.  Don't feel bad but dont feel happy.   I just want to be excited for something and I dont feel that way yet.  Give meds more time? Need some reassurance. Second guessing myself and feelings is so annoying but cant help it.
