Need some advice for my dilemma....

Hi Everyone, I was wondering if there is anyone in the forum whose been out of hip replacements for more than a year?..I've had both LTHP and RTHP done plus a LTKR. And after a year from my LHRP, I still have pain especially on the right side of my body and throughout while standing and walking. I've been to PT, but all they recommended me to do is use my muscles a certain way, but once I stand, seems my body wants to stand or walk the way it wants to, I keep going back to surgeon but he has little advice to help me...Any replys?

Truthfully I would go get consultation with a different surgeon. Before I chose who did mine I counsulted with well known surgeon outside of my town and the first thing he told me was that he had repaired a lot of work from the docs where I live. I would find someone with a stellar reputation and pay the $100 or so for a consultation. A second opinion is always good but since you are having pain that your surgeon is not dealing with talking to someone else will probably be the best thing you can do.

    Dear Lisa

Apologies if I have not understand correctly. I'm sure that there are a number here who ha e had successful total hip replacement surgery over a year ago.

I'm recovering from a revision of my twenty year old hip replacement and had no issues and within a few months had forgotten I even had had one!

This revision at seventy-five has been less easy for other reasons but I'm moving steadily to a position that I'm expecting to gave forgotten about it in the next couple of months.

    All the best

I had both hips done posteriorly last May.  A few months in I developed a bursa on my right hip.  They gave me an injection, which helped some, but it took a lot of exercising to work it out.  Now my hips feel pretty damn good!  I still have a "hitch" when I bend over, so I have to be careful.  I am about to have a torn meniscuc reparied next Friday.  My legs are so weak now from being inactive so the muscles weren't able to support my knee properly.  It just bent out to the side!  After it happened the second time, the surgeon (same one that did my hips) is performing an arthoscopy to repair the meniscus and smooth out the arthritis.  It takes time.  My surgeon said I would be pretty normal with my hips after 18 months.  After doing PT for a few months, my surgeon told me to just do strengthening exercises and that I didn't need PT any more.  I hope this helps!  Feel free to ask any questions.

      Hi StaceyJG1

What are the strength in exercises you were given if I may ask

Leg lunges, as you can tolerate, stationary bike, leg presses, and the abduction machines that will strengthen and increase the flexibility.  I have no idea what they're called!  One you sit in and push out, the other one you pull in.  I hope that helps!

I've had both hips replaced but continue to experience pain in my left hip & lower back. I'm 64 years old & have pretty severe arthritis in my lower back due to wear & tear arthritis from 34 years in the nursing field. So many times we have referred pain & it's difficult to know the origin of our pain. I am getting ready to undergo a radio frequency ablation next week of my lowerback. I had this done 4 years ago & got good results from it. However I had the left hip replaced in April of 2016 with 2 revisions necessary within 10 months.

Hope you can get some answers soon. God bless.💙 Vickie

I think after being so sedentary after the surgery, it wakes up all the other aches and pains that have weakened.  I also had the back pain and went through the numbing shots first, then the ablation.  My back still hurts, but it's 80% better.  The best thing is to work on strengthening your core muscles and walking.  Best of luck to you!

    dear lisa,

warm welcome to this hippies forum -

I am not sure how to answer your question ... I had 2 THR surgeries within 6 months over one year ago .

what kind of pain are you experiencing ? Is it more stiff and tigh muscles or stabs, grinding pain ?

Were you diagnosed with OA ?

How long post-op are you from 2nd THR?

Your body is still healing in addition to learn how to walk properly - of course it will go back to the old way first after so many years of compensation -

it takes patience and time and a lot of awareness for some of us (like me) to actually get the hang of it -

Unfortunately Ortho Surgeon is not the right person to advice you ... he has done his job and if everything is in place and healing well, it is up to you ...

I don't think a second opinion from a surgeon can help you out here, unless you are in severe pain -

do you have physical therapy? some balance exercises might help you right now ...

Don't get discouraged or impatient and come back here anytime to let us know how you are getting on ..

    big warm hug

Hi Lisa because you have had two joints replaced on the left. It would have put more strain on the right side.. I have only had RTHR nearly 22 months ago but do get pain when standing too long due to having OA in left knee. It sounds like your muscles need retraining. You IT band maybe tight too. It takes 2 years for all the muscles to heal.Take painkillers before exercise to see if that helps. If after a few months you are still having problems then seek a second opinion x

    Hi Lisa,

I had a FRHR last July.  I was fortunate not to have any issues.  By the 3rd month I was released from PT and I haven't looked back.  I did suffer with some discomfort in my femur until the 7-8 month mark.  From what I understand, that was normal.

Sorry to hear that you are still in pain.  I would strongly suggest that you get a second opinion.

    Best wishes!

That is a lot of surgery - so you are more likely to get more problems than most of us.

I had a Left THR Oct 2015, with revision Jan 2016, and have just been on a strenuous holiday walking 5-10 miles every day.  I had problems one day with thigh pain, but otherwise OK.

I do find I walk a bit 'wonky' sometimes, where the leg just doesn't go straight, I just slow down (aren't we all so impatient), and remember to concentrate on walking properly again.

    Best wishes

    Graham
