Which two medications are you talking about?

If you mean, nalmefene and naltrexone, then I believe they are both as effective. However, naltrexone appears to have less side effects for a number of people.

But, if you are in the UK, nalmefene is the medication that has been given the go ahead (guidance) for people still drinking. It is hard to obtain UK prescription naltrxone.

    Susan,

You have already previously been prescribed naltrexone and Selincro as per The Sinclair Method, and tried TSM, but couldn't stay compliant.  You also had a 90 minute phone conversation with myself about it one Sunday evening.

You then came onto this very forum and informed everyone that TSM was a bunch of s##t and that the documentary, One Little Pill, that people donated their hard-earned money to was a also a bunch of s##t and a complete waste of time and money.  And this was not long after having a 90 minute telephone conversation with me about it one Sunday evening.

No matter which of the two medications you use, TSM will NOT work unless you remain compliant.

If you were to decide to try TSM again, then it would be very much in your interest to work with a doctor and/or counsellor who can help you maintain compliance and monitor your progress.

Hello Joanna. You are right, we have all been there and everyone deserves to receive the treatment that best suits them.

I didn't want you wasting a lot of time for yourself (and others) answering your question about which is best when you have already tried both, and more importantly, really should be getting some one-to-one, face-to-face, physical help.

Forums are great for support, but the person to be helping you with your question is a medically trained person who can get you the help you need.

      Good luck.

Hello Joanna. Please tell me where would I find a medically trained person for the help i need ? No money for Private Rehab. My G P no too stretched as it is. So no referral coming from his Direction or any of his Partners tried them all without success. Yes I need all the Luck I can possibly find.Sorry to have wasted your time this morning.

I remember you telling me that your doctor had prescribed you with both naltrexone and Selincro before, so whether your doctor is too stretched or not, he/she has to be the first person to go to.

You GP can either then prescribe again, or explain why they won't and perhaps refer you to a specialist physician in alcohol care who might.

Hi Susan, if as Joanna says your Doctor has prescribef Naltrexone and Selincro before  - then you are very lucky.  My doc had never heard of TSM nor these meds and said she could not help me and referred me to ARC.  I personally would grab them and take them exactly as they say and with Joanna's help.  That seems to be the key - compliancy.

Before I started my Monday to Friday 2 small glasses of wine with a free Sat/Sunday I had started to feel ill and that is not like me.  I knew it was alcohol floating around my body ALL next day from my evening drinking and this meant I did not dare drive.  I did not like it at all.  Quality of life was nil.  Maybe have another go at TSM and the tablet coz you can't leave it.  But you do get the very best advice on here.

      Keep at it.

Have a look at meds if you feel thats best, however please also think about the reasons behind your drinking. No one drinks to a big level if their feeling happy with life...also the drink is going to increase your mood to a lower point. Trust me i know this and thats from only recently, still working on things. You dont mention how much your drinking?

Hello Sharon.Thankyou for your reply much appreciated. How much do I drink? Given up counting now as long as I have a Bottle of Wine nearby i can get up - do my chores i.e. Looking after a very poorly husband, clean up after him & just try and keep our home clean, his precious Lawns cut precisely as he would do them

. As for my previous Doctor he disappeared along time ago ( I wonder why all the good Doctors go into Farming must be more rewarding ! ?

I used to drink lots of wine in the past at its worst prob 2.5 bottles a day but at least 2 usually. How long has this been going on? It costs a lot of money too. I then progressed on to drinking neat vodka. At the minute it has cost me my family although i have stopped recently and intend to stay of it and get them back.

It seems that you have had a lot of help in terms of meds but they havent quite worked out. Is there no way that you can see a different doctor or get referral to an addictions team? I dont know if you drink all day but is there no way that you can cut it down a little? I genuinely was drinking at least 2 bottles but could manage on one. Do you have any days off? I have never been on meds and while i sing their praises as they work for so many people, some of it has to come from yourself in terms of really wanting to give up. But trust me i know its hard...gave up started gave up started and so it went on. Have you tried AA or any kind of therapy at all apart from the meds? One way or the other its very hard to give up on your own. Try reading Allen Carrs book which teaches you how to see alcohol differently, it helped me no end (coming from a raw vodka drinker). Tonight when i was stressed i would normally have been running to the off licence but instead i ran 10 mins ago to the shop and bought some chocolate. It is hard. Try and cut down a little if you can until you get proper help. Look at every option available, something will help you out of this. I know its hard but keep trying.

Thanks Sharon. At least someone cares.Good to have a positive response.Yes usually the same amount of wine as you - But it keeps increasing unfortunately.Stress is always a trigger for me.Sometimes I just don't bother going anywhere which might cause it because I can't cope without my reward at the end or secretly hiding a bottle somewhere just in case ( How Sad is That ) I haven't had a day off for weeks - use to keep a diary of my drinking now i can't be bothered 😕 Will take your advice. Will only drink one bottle of Wine tomorrow & cut down slowly and be strong instead of weak. A A not for me been there done it too clicky too Religious Which Allen Carr book do you recommend? Looking into his books he has written quite a few. Is Allen Carr an Alcoholic? Good to chat to you & thanks for your advice.X

I hid bottles everywhere but if it gives you any hope, i found 1/2 bottle of vodka the other day when i was on my own and believe it or not i actually poured it down the sink. Found another two small ones and binned those aswell. Even 6 weeks ago i would never have done that in a million years. Tonight because my family are not here i was just so lonley and under major stress right now to be honest and yes i did feel like doing my usual but i didnt and put my pjs on. Little bit later i bought chocolate instead. Still eating it right now lol sugar cravings. Your right even cutting down is better than nothing. Buy STOP DRINKING NOW EASYWAY ALLEN CARR. Bear in mind that when i read this i could not have been at a lower point...so i really took the whole thing in over two days, read non stop. Then listened to the cd which comes with it. When i feel like hitting the bottle i pick the book up and read a little bit just to make me not forget where i am, also i listen to the cd every night without fail. A few other things happened apart from the book that really put me off drinking, the other week my body went into someway that i have never experienced before, my legs and body where shaking and i could barley walk. It wasnt a panic attack as i have had those before this was different and i never want to feel that way again. The drink only increases stress as you constantly feel guilty about it and i am sure you genuinely have other things going on in your life that make you stressed too, but wine wont help. I was at an addictions meeting the other day and one woman there was just so far gone with drink it was unreal, you just knew it. Every person in the room has a drink prob along with me and i am sure they all know it too, she just looked and sounded so aufal. I just thought i do not want to be like that and if i dont somehow put an end to this now i will either die (hence shaky legs/body) or i will become like her. That and the fact that i am now fighting to get my family back together who are not here with me now all down TO ME DRINKING. I have used that book and every single part of me that can fight not to do it any more. So can you! Bear in mind i was on the wine at the same level and still i didnt stop but went on to buying vodka because it was less noticable. I hid it everywhere, i forgot myself.

I know its so hard, the book will really help you if you take it all in and use it for what it is worth.Yes and DO see an addictions counciller. I went to AA but it wasnt for me either but there are other groups that maybe able to help, even your doctor will be able to say whats in your local area. I just know that i have to do this. If you want to so can you, just put the fight in. Cutting down is a great start though! Dont let it go any further...Do it for yourself and get some help of some sort. Like i say if i get that feeling for a drink i read some of the book again and it does put me off. Good luck and let me know how you get on. x
