Need surgery on my 2nd toe

My 2nd toe on both my feet have a deformity known as hammertoe. I will need an operation to remove one of the joints which will shorten the toe by 1/2 an inch but my main concern is the pain and recovery time. I work in the medical field and stand on my feet all day. I can take two weeks off but concerned if I'm gonna be in too much pain to even be on light duty. Did the pain ever completely go away after the recovery period or will I regret not living with the deformity that is somewhat painful at times.

Hello I had 2nd toe hammertoe surgery together with realignmeant of big toe and adjacent mallet toe reduced 9 Feb. I am going mental with the imobility I have. In 2 days time they take the pins out. I can't wait. I have had virtually no pain, however, my foot is wrapped and encased in a medical shoe which is not comfortable to walk on too far as you are lopsided. I elected to have this surgery at the age of 68 as my mother had hammer toes on both feel and they were bad. So bad that they amputated one and she was due back to have the other done and refused to go. She became a cripple. I took note as like her I am a hearty walker, gym enthusiast and lawn bowler. I hardly ever get in my car and I love fresh air. It's one month now since my op and I've had enough. Bathing is impossible. I have good friends who have driven me to bridge etc. I have a husband who couldn't cope to begin with, so I ended up at my daughter's, only to come back after 4 nights and he is now Mr. Wonderful. I am hoping I will begin walking on Friday but probably taking the pins out will mean I have a wound that will need healing and they will wrap it up again for another 2 weeks of misery.

Sorry I'm at a low ebb....I cannot see anyone going back to work until the bandages are off as you have to keep your leg elevated at all times. Good luck

I'm 27 and have a 19 month old and am so afraid of not being able to take care of her. I have help and a great support system. I just need my 2nd toe on both foots done. Do you think I would be ok taking 2 weeks off work? Am I gonna be in great pain to walk around?

Everyone is different. Talk to your consultant. You are much younger than me! However, I am told I have a very good heart rate recovery, I am super fit but let's see about recovery. I went out to lunch today driven by my best friend and paid for by my husband. I bathed (with difficulty but did it) and washed my hair AND put makeup on!!! I even put the washing on and tumble dried my ONE flight sock I wear permanently on my good leg! I then dysoned the stairs.  All because I was going out!!! I am saying one month of inactivity for me was murder. You have a toddler and your mind will be elsewhere.  Keeping your pecker up is the most important thing. My scene was op and walk out in medical shoe (I promptly had bleeding from base of foot and back again next day to bandage over!), 2 weeks later rebandage but still in medical shoe, my next milestone is tomorrow 2 weeks later for pins out YIPPEE. I'll let you know if I can walk then or if it's another ***two weeks until I have no medical shoe......
