Negative results... what now?

Hi,
I'm male 42. Last December I had sex with a new female partner. We used a condom for intercourse, but I received unprotected oral sex. In the following days/weeks I had no evident lesions, sensations, etc. However, about a month after the encounter I began to have a strange sensation in my urethra, not really pain or burning, more like a needle or a light cold burning feeling acompanied by ocasional itching. There is no pain when urinating nor in orgasm. These symptoms were accompanied by an increase in urinating frequently up to 10 times a day for a little more than a week and also by a feeling of urinating even when unrequired. I had these symptons for nearly two weeks when I managed to visit the urologist (1 month and a half after the sex encounter), who prescribed some Flavoxate for the urinating urgency/ferquency and a set of STI tests. The tests included urine culture and semen sample for mycoplasms, bacteria and chlamydia. All came back negative. The doctor was nonchallant about the results (this is about two months after the encounter)... the results are negative, so he figures whatever mistery there is it will clear by it self, and that it is also possible that I had some physical damage. Since I have absolutely no cause to suspect physical damage, I wondered and questioned him if there could be any another cause (sexual or not) for these symptons, but this made no change to his advice. He prescribed me some anti-inflamatory (Nimesulide) to take for a week, which I did. During the nimesulide week my symptons did tone down, albeit at times became worst.... for two days my urethra was painfully sensitive along the shaft. I have now been 6 days of the Nimesulide and my symptons are intermitent, generally during the evening it is quite disconforting, though I never had pain again. Currently my sensation is more like the begining disconfort in the initial area of the urethra (the gland portion), no pain, but a little itching, which increases during the evening.
I'm unhappy with my situation and with the prospect of infecting my girlfriend sex partner. So I have had no sex since that encounter. I'm aware that contracting some decease (STI or not) for a male receiving oral is unlikely (but possible).
I wonder if there could be some other infection which would not be detected in the tests performed, that I should test for? And generally what advice would you give me on how to proceed.

Sometimes frequent urination/urgency is caused by prostate problems.
Did your doctor check you for that type of problem? It could just be a coincidence the symptons showed up after the encounter and are unrelated.
I agree, you should see someone that does not dismiss your concerns.

Again, I have been seing a doctor since the symptoms begun (1st visit to doc's office about a week after initial symptoms). Regarding this I've been thinking about a second opinion (fresh thinking). I've not appretiated much the aparent(?) nonchalant attitude of the doctor, but have not pursued that because up until now he has basically followed what my cursory exploration of the literature advices on diagnosis of uretritis. However, it seems that it is about time to do it.

Sometimes the difference in doctors and their knowledge can be eye opening. I had a female type problem years ago and went to four different gynecologists, they all did the same test and came up with nothing, Then I found a great doctor that knew what was wrong by just the symptons I gave him, and he solved my problem. Naturally, he became my doctor for life! Don't give up, and try to let the next doctor diagnose your problem instead of trying to guess what it might be. Find someone with a good reputation if possible.
Good luck and let us know when you solve the mystery.

I'm glad you asked, since it may help you to find out what may be causing your symptoms!
I looked for a second opinion and chosed a urologist with a really good resumé. He diagnosed me with benign prostatic hypertrophy. Type IIIb prostatitis (non-bacterial, also known as 'chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome') was also explored as an alternative diagnosys.
In essence the growth of the prostate (uncommon at my age, 42) may trigger a self-reinforcing neurologic stimulation loop that creates havoc among your nervous system down there. This lead to all sort of difficult to describe symptoms. The therapy seeks to break this neurologic loop using some alfa-blockers. Typically this is carried out in daily doses for 3 months. After which, if symptoms prevail it may be chronic, you may need a little longer protocol, or it may be that it is a type IIIb prostatitis.
In my case, the symptons only toned downed a little for a month or so, and them disapeared. So we prolonged the protocol. It has been 3 months or so, since I finished the protocol and I've only had a few minor feelings (that have disappeared by themselves). So I'm ver happy with the result, although it is in doubt if the issue is finished (it may came back).
The protocol consists of daily dosages of tamsulosin (an alpha blocker). Its effectiveness in regards to Type IIIb prostatitis (non-bacterial, also known as 'chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome') is knowned to be limited and requiring long protocols (this may explain my results).
I have a new visit to schedule where this will be discussed. However, I can tell you that I recovered enormously! And hope that this may be of service to you.

I am in the same boat with you. I received unprotected oral sex during a random unplanned encounter and began feeling the exact same symptoms almost immediately after. I have a tingling sensation at the tip of meatus and increased frequency of urination. Some time after I began to have sore testicles and aches/soreness/stickiness in my leg. I was tested by swab two days later for common STI's and treated but results can back negative and no relief of symptoms. I am married and no don't want it infect my wife if it some type of sexual infection. Referred to a urologist and I requested blood work but was only given a quick look over and the finger test. Diagnosed with Prostatitis and prescribed Doxy for 14 days. Only been on it a few days and the discomfort in penis is almost unnoticeable but my testicles are still very sore when sitting for longer periods. No painful urination or any real pain thus far just discomfort like sense of something there. After much research I am very concerned that I contracted herpes. All of the information I've read from people like us posting online all have neglected to get tested for herpes or say they will and most never post results. My wife has had cold sores before and we avoid kissing and oral during those times and I have never had a cold sore in my life but don't think it's a huge deal if I ever get one (from my wife of course). She hasn't had one in a long time that I've noticed.
My question to you is did you ever follow up the herpes test later on after the urologist diagnosed you with Prostatitis?? Please help to calm my nerves...

I got tested for HIV, syphyllis, chlamydia, steptcoccus and I am negative to all of that. I have been tested for UTI multiple times, and again it's negative.
I also got a prostate exame, and my prostate seems just fine! Is not enlarged or anything.
So, for now, I am thinking about herpes. John, did you get tested for herpes again? How are you doing with tamsulsin? How long did it take to have any effect?
