Nerve pain

Hi I'm currently 6 months post op from left full hip replacement. From week 6 I have been having nerve pain and discomfort. Doctors don't seem interested. Taking naproxen to help with pain. Some days the pain isn't there and others it's terrible. Just wondering what others did if they had the same issues. Exercises and hydro don't seem to have any effect. If anything some exercises make it worse. Unfortunately my right hip also needs replacing soon but wanting to put it off until get nerve pain sorted. Any advice would be great thanks. Xx

    Hi Sarah

Im 16 months+post op and I have nerve pain.  Where is your pain? mine is in my foot.

I feel the same as you, it is diccicult to get anyone to listen.  From the beginning I have been complaining.  All they kept saying was it was too soon to tell. At first they told me 12 months but now they are saying 2years. I have been for a nerve conduction test and they say there is nerve damage but it's not serious.  They want to experience it.  Like you I have tried various things creams, tablets and different alternative therapies, nothing seems to work.  I can't give you any advice only feel for you.  It's very frustrating not to be able to get any satisfaction but I'll keep trying.  My quality of life is affected.  I'm a rambler and like dancing and I can't do any.

If you get any satisfaction please let me know.

    All the best Brenda xx

    Dear Sarah

Can you tell us a bit more about you so that we have more to go on. It seems a bit strange that the problem showed up at week six.

    Are you walking unaided?

    Cheers Richard

Hi Richard, nerve pain is in lower back, bottom, hip area and calf of operated leg. It can also go as far as my shoulders on a bad day. I had avascular necrosis on left hip plus arthritis. Never had issue before the operation. I had thought it had gone away but I had a two hour car journey and a walk and that seems to of set it off again. Only think that happened after the op was the day after op when I was out of bed I collapsed and had to be man handled back into bed. I have been try all morning to get through to my consultant secretary to no joy so far.

      Dear Sarah

I think the problem is likely to be back related from what you have told us. If I had these symptoms my first port of call would be to a chiropractor who will check that your back is in correct alignment and if necessary carefully correct it. Nothing to worry about...I've had it done several times.

A back that is out of true can so easily be the cause of pain not only in one's back but other parts of the body so best to start there.

      Good luck Richard

      Dear Sarah

Please avoid a McTimoney one as they have a more limited range of options.

      Cheers

Morning Sarah. I feel your pain! I'm almost 10 months out and started have excruciating nerve pain. Mine is in the front and side of thigh. It started about 4 months after my second surgery. I dislocated my first rhr and 3 weeks later I'm having a total hip revision. I was 6 weeks non weight bearing, no hip exercises or flexion past 80 degrees. I'm having a hard time finding anything to wear cause every thing that touches my thigh bothers me. Even my softest blanket! I've had 2 steroid injections into the cutaneous nerve. It's relieved about 60/70 percent of the sensitivity. I'm also taking 50 mg of lyrica.im using a voltaren cream and an otc cream called Aspercream for nerve pain. They help some. I've been told by my pain dr that it's a trapped nerve possibly caused by scar tissue pressing on the nerve. It can also be nerve damage caused by the surgery. They did not want to do a nerve study as they said since I got relief from injections and that this particular nerve is hard to study. Not sure why. I go see my surgeon tomorrow as I cant deal with this much longer. I find resting and icing helps. I'm fine it the morning but once I get moving it starts. You say drs seem uninterested?? That's terrible. You really need to see them to find out what's going on. I know nerves take a long time to heal. Hugs 🤗LD

Sorry Sarah. Now that I've read more posts I see we are not having the same nerve pain issues. I was so hoping that I found a fellow hipster with the same issues as I. Alone again naturally. Wishing you all the best. LD. 😕

I'm suspect it's due to the back and not the hip. Just out of curiosity, did you have the posterior or anterior hip surgery.

    Hope you feel better soon.

I just want to say these stories scare me from doing the surgery and unfortunately it's both my hips! I just wish it would go away! I'd rather it of been my shoulder. My husband had biceps and shoulder operation. It was a painful process but he had to go back to work. It just seems like hips are worse!!!

      Hi Deb59

I know how you feel I still need to get my other hip done. But if I'm honest the nerve/back pain isn't as bad as the pain I had before as my hip had collapsed. My other hip is very painful and unpredictable as some days it's bareable and others I can't weight bare. I would still do it all again. Most people have no or little complications after hip replacement.

You know I didn't thing it could really collapse! Today I go to my second visit to see how much worse it is from last visit!!

I guess I think that it'll make things worse and then I'm stuck because the operation would be done I you can't reverse it! You know what I mean? I've read this is the most successful surgery, but it still seems like complications do happen.

I just don't want to change my everyday routine! I clean a couple of houses and it seems like I won't be working for a while. I'll end up losing them and that too upsets me! Do you know what I mean

Mine collapsed due to Avascular necrosis. I had to give up work two years before I had it done so I can understand why your reluctant to stop working even for a short while but in the long run your health needs to come first. If it get so bad you won't be able to do your job like I found. It's also amazing where time goes and how quick you improve after.
