Nerve pain

Hi. I'm experiencing very bad pain continually from nerve endings in my middle back. This travels all the way on my left side & under my ribs. It gets so bad at times I have to take a knock out tablet. ( acupan) keeps me awake at all hours and now I'm literally exhausted. GP has always tried to persuade me to take Amitriptyline, as says good results with nerve pain . Now I've got nuropathy and pins & needles in my feet, numbness in my leg constantly. Anyone else had experience for this with Amytriptalyne? Has it worked and what dose ? Thanks . I really am anti prescribed meds, but am getting desperate

Hi jacqueline, have you had an MRI and if so what has caused you to have this problem. I came off of amitriptyline in December last year, it took 11 months to get off 10 mg. I was on it for nerve pain. Yes it helped me and you are really only ment to be on it  for  a year or so to allow the nerves to calm and then you may be ok. I found it helped a little but, i had to keep increasing as it does not  continue to work (well not for me). I found at my max 30 mg the dry mouth and constant  fatigue too much so dropped back down eventually to 10 mg. I took it for a year  then my gp said just stop it  as 10 mg is a small dose. It effected me awfully coming off it but, i am off it and really would not want to be on it again. However , it works really well for some people and you have to think quality of life xx

Hi. Thanks for your reply. Yes I had an MRI & I have a cyst in side my spinal canal. Apparently it's a rare place to have it. It's in the middle ,between my shoulder blades. It's inoperable & it's benign. They kept thier eye on it for a year & 1/2 . Tgey swear that's why I'm getting the pain. Sometimes with an intense burning. I've had Injections in the nerve endings all over my back for the last 3 years which were effective & was pain free for months on end. Unfortunately the last lot we're unsuccessful .. and probably the result of now having periphial nuropathy & Myasplasia ( something or other) can't remember what it's called. I feel im going to cave into taking Amitriptyline just to see if it helps. Dreading it though as need lots of bad side effects about it. Not only that I don't want to get addicted to it. Consultant tried me on Gabapentine but had 3 fits within 14 days so took them straight off me. After this experience im even more against prescribed meds. Sounds like you had a horriffic time coming off them? Even that's putting me off . As to says just take 10mlg but consultant said I'd need to take 50mlg for it to even touch my problem....?

Jacqueline you could try noratriptyline many people say you have less side effects it is the same type of drug but more expensive than amitriptyline. The dru is not addictive but, it has an effect on brain chemicals which, is why  i had the awful anti cholonergic effects coming off it xx I hope you get some relief xx

Hi Jacqueline, it sounds awful what you are going through hugs. Have you thought about getting a second opinion with what options are available to you? I am not a doctor but have now developed a view with any brain meds, that if I have no choice but to go on them, I am going to make sure that the dose is low and I am only on them for a matter of months. Let us know how you get on with them.
