Nerve Pain in Face

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and wondered if anyone could help me.

For a few months I've had issues with bloating and nerve pain in my body (like on fire kind of feeling).

I don't usually eat alot of bead but a couple of weeks ago I started making my own wholewheat bread.  I was having a small slice of toast for breakfast and a pitta for lunch and after a few days I woke up with really bad nerve pain around my eye on the left side of my face.  I get alot of electric shocks in my body and a constant burning feeling and I am always constipated!

Does anyone think this could be wheat!!  I'd appreciate any help.  Kim

It's certainly possible, however, I would  be inclined to go to your GP to get it checked out, as it could also be a sign of something else.  Now of course, I don't want to alarm you, or make you think the worst, as it could be something as simple as a migraine causing your eye problems (and yes, you can get a migraine without a headache), but as with all new symptoms, it's better to seek medical advice.

It may be that you have eaten more bread than usual - as you say, but isn't it worth checking it out? Either way, you need a doctor's advice.  Good luck.

As everyone has different symptoms with coeliac disease, it's impossible to say without a biopsy being done. Some coeliacs don't even get any symptoms (not that that's a good thing, as damage is being done without you realising).

      Hi Fiona

Thank you for taking the time to respond I really appreciate it!!

Yes I was only eating a couple of crackers previously for quite a while as I try to avoid to many carbs.  It wasn't until I made my own bread that I was having it twice a day but I wouldn't say it was a hugh amount.   I'm thinking that maybe I just overloaded my body with the wheat/gluten.

It took a couple of weeks for it to calm down after I stopped eating the bread.  I'm going to take your advise and get it checked out though!  The only thing is that I wanted to stop eating the gluten because I do feel a bit better already but I looked it up on the internet and they say you have to keep eating it to enable the test to work either way.

I'm in Qatar at the moment so I think I'll just have to carry on with the crackers until I get back to the UK for Christmas.

Thanks again Fiona, Take Care Kim

      You are welcome smile

I'm pleased you are going to get it checked out.  It's always best.  Also, you are correct in that you must eat wheat every day in order to get an acurate result.  You need to be eating wheat for at least 6 weeks on a daily basis in order to get correct results.  Don't be put off though if you get a negative blood test because they are not very accurate, although they do suggest you get a blood test first, before they go on to do a biopsy.  My blood test came back as negative but my biopsy was positive, and I think you will find this happens to a lot of people.

Don't be tempted to give up wheat now and then reintroduce it before your blood test or biopsy because if you do have coeliac disease you may find your reactions to gluten a lot worse than previously.  Get the whole thing tested first, then if you do get positive results, you can give up the gluten start to get your health back on track.  Of course, if you need any other help, you can always come back onto the forum at any time.

      Good luck with everything!

You do need to be having gluten for 6 weeks prior to a gastroscopy - equivalent to 4 slices of bread a day.
