neuropathic pain in big toe

following removal of my left foot big toe nail I discoverd two small tumours underneath which I was able to remove. i have been in continuous pain ever since which has been diagnosed as a neuropathic pain which I have to live  with. The toe swells up at night time and turns beetroot red and I have also been told by a foot surgeon that it is a "SUNDOWNER TOE" not uncommon in American jewish people who smoke. I take oral pain killers before going to bed but find great difficulty in sleeping. My daughter  uses germaloids for piles and as it contains local anaesthetic properties suggested  I try using it on my toe.  It certainly helps to reieve the pain and for the first time in many year Ihave been getting some quality sleep. The instructions for use state : for anus use only.  Does anybody know if their is any reason why it cannot be used on my toe?

I don't to offend you or your doctor but it sure sounds like the gout to me.  Have they ruled that out through testing?

Thanks for that Patricia.  My doctor became quite offended when I asked him whether it could be gout.(I showed him a press cutting with the symptons) He said that he knew the symptons without my telling him and that my condition was definately not gout- I must have caught him on a bad day

Ian, I wasn't able to find anything online called "sundowner's toe"  So did this doctor dismiss your imput and not even perform any test to rule out the gout?  This doctor has an ego problem and treated you in a very condescending manner.  Personally speaking, I would have been out of there in a heart just because of his attitude.  Not all doctors are compassionate but to speak to a suffering patient like he did  you is inexcusable.  It sounds like he did nothing for you, correct?  If so, why not get a second opinion?

I think  most gout type conditions are related to arthritis.  Try to get ahold of some Voltaran gel.  It's for arthritis and helps me tremendously.  You will need a script and it goes through the liver but it's been a lifesaver for me.  Good luck to you sweetie.  And remember doctors are not Gods and have no right to be mean to you like that guy was.  He probably goes home at night and kicks his dog sad  My doctor is a total blessing to me and every own else that goes to him.  So, others like him are out there and you deserve better.  Good luck!

Hi Ian. I have Neuropathy and Gout and it sounds like Gout to me. Why dot you just book yourself in for a blood test and ask them to test your Uric Acid Level.

If it is Gout your levels will be abnormal. If they are you can take a drug called Colchicine to lower your levels.

The uric acid test is not reliable. Several other conditions can effect uric acid levels.  The only sure way to determine if gout is present is to draw a fluid sample from the effected toe.
