Neuropathy after TKR?!!

Posted , 7 users are following.

I am twelve weeks post TKR and still have problems with pain and swelling but now another problem has arisen. My toes burn and tingle in both feet as do both my legs. The doctor has given me tablets for Neuropathy but they don't appear to be working. Has anybody else had this problem after TKR? It's all very worrying.

I'd appreciate any info whatsoever, I wonder what has caused it and will it ever go.I never had it before my TKR.

Hi Saralice - what a minefield we have entered !

I am starting to realise what a complicated journey this TKR can be. At nearly 7 weeks postop all is going really well but now I have a Mortons Neuroma in my foot - same leg as TKR. Surgeon said as the leg has not been functioning properly for such a long time due to being out of alignment etc this has happened. I feel like I have a lump under the ball of my foot and the top of the foot can become excruciatingly painful. Putting weight on it is not fun and the only solution to him is to operate and remove the neuroma BUT not till my 6 month anniversary for some reason. The foot feels numb across the ball and the two toes next to the big one can cross when i walk.

I will follow your post with interest to see if others have foot issues.

    All the best,

    Jenni.

Depending on what you are taking as to the relief. The tinglnn is probably nerve damage caused by the surgery. No matter how good the surgeon some are probably going to be cut. As the reattach and die up the cause pain, generally in the lower extremities.

If the Dr prescribed gabepentin the dosage can be upped considerably. I know people that are on 3500 mg daily but started on 300 mg daily. There is another one called lyrica but is definitely a 2nd choice because of price.

Same for me, but I have neuropathy since I had a bout of diverticulitis and was on intervenous painkillers a few years back. Numbness started then and is still evident, BUT my numbness intensified while I was again on an intervenors painkiller drip after my TKR. I am going to a podiatrist this week to be fitted for new shoes( with corrective lifts) and some insight to the newly intensified numbness. I will let you know the outcome. But from my experience the nerve damage lingers and barely gets better. Hopefully yours will fare better.

Hi, I'm 15 pos 2nd tkr and ive got tingling lower leg and feet also some ankle pain when resting. Referred to physio who believes it to be neurothopy caused by the tightening of the joint on the fibula after tkr, apparently the sciatic nerve runs through it and as the joint has tightened its squashed the nerve. I've had it deep massaged by physio to move it back into place and am now having acupuncture which has all really helped. She described it as its like trying to unravel a hosepipe and straighten it out

That is a great analogy .

I am keen to try Acupuncture. Have just spoken to my case manager and even though the foot issue I have is a result of the knee issue - lol - it is considered a seperate event so I will not get any help with the rehab of the foot cost wise. Oh well.....

Maybe appeal their decision? The acupuncture is really making a difference

I will have to jump through all the hoops again and so have made a GP appointment - X-rays etc will be needed groan.

My son uses acupuncture as his go to response for his body ailments and swears by it.
