Never ending UTI

Hi, I am 29 years male. I am suffering from UTI for almost 7 weeks now sad For the first 2 weeks my GP prescribed herbal medicine but it had no effect. After that,i had  blood in my urine and my GP prescribed ciprofloxacin 500 mg for 5 days. I got little better for a week. But it started again, so i visited urologist who suggested to continue ciprofloxacin for another 3 weeks. I have already taken for a week but i see no much improvement.

I never had sex in my life so my urologist ruled out the possibility of a STD.

My main symptoms are

1. Sharp needle like pain in tip of the penis on urination [like urine passes through heavily wounded skin]

2. Erections are very painful mostly my entire urethra pains and especially on the head of the penis

Also, i dont see any redness or rash on my penis or i dont have any discharge and no fever. Could someone please suggest me what this could be ? It freaks me out when i need to use the toilet due to the painsad

What tests did the Urologist do?  Did he do a urinalysis and a culture?   Does he think you have prostatitis?  You probably wasted your time on the herbal treatment.  With women (I'm female) a week of the proper antibiotic will provide relief.  I don't know if that's true for men.  3 weeks on Cipro is a long time.   Do you feel confident in your urologist?  If you don't get relief soon, I'd go to the emergency room.

    Prostatitis symptoms can include:

Pain or burning sensation when urinating (dysuria)

Difficulty urinating, such as dribbling or hesitant urination

Frequent urination, particularly at night (nocturia)

    Urgent need to urinate

    Cloudy urine

    Blood in the urine

Pain in the abdomen, groin or lower back

Pain in the area between the scrotum and rectum (perineum)

Pain or discomfort of the penis or testicles

    Painful ejaculation

Flu-like signs and symptoms (with bacterial prostatitis)

Hi, Thank you for replying. Urologist took a urine sample and he asked me to come next week for the culture test results. He thinks it might be a recurrence of UTI as i stopped antibiotics in 5 days that was prescribed by my GP earlier.

I have the following symptoms from the list you shared.

Pain or burning sensation when urinating (dysuria) - yeah on the tip

Difficulty urinating, such as dribbling or hesitant urination - sometimes it is slow but most of the times its normal flow.

Pain in the area between the scrotum and rectum (perineum) - not a pain but i have a discomfort there.

Pain or discomfort of the penis or testicles - Pain on the penis

Painful ejaculation - I have pain on the urethra when i have an erection. so am not sure about ejaculation as i never tried after i get the pain

I second what marilee just said, have you had a urine culture done so that the urologist knows exactly what he's dealing with here?

Ciprofloxacin is usually prescribed for prostatitis and sometimes for persistent UTIs.  It should never be prescribed as the first antibiotic for a UTI and I'm not at all sure why your GP would go for a herbal medicine first - are you in the UK? This sounds a bit unorthodox!

Cipro is a very useful antibiotic because it will kill just about everything so many doctors prescribe out of some kind of laziness - after all, it saves them from having to do a culture.  However, a culture is the first thing they should do so that they're giving  a targeted medicine to deal with the problem rather than just guessing.

The downside of ciprofloxacin is that it can have some very nasty side effects and the more you take, the more likely you are to get hit by these side effects.  The most common ones are pains in the joints and muscles which can get so bad your tendons can rupture.  Depression and insomnia are also common along with skin and stomach problems.  There are several discussions on these pages about it so just look for Ciprofloxacin or fluoroquinolone antibiotics (the actual class - there are 5 different names) in the list of discussions to get a better idea of what I'm talking about.

My suggestion would be to stop taking it since you've had quite a lot already - certainly stop taking it immediately if you get any pains anywhere - this is stated in the packet leaflet so please take it seriously.  Go to a doctor with a sample and ask for a culture to be made so that you know what is causing the problem.  Your urologist sounds like he is treating you for prostatitis already while your doctor frankly sounds like he hasn't a clue!

Hi Miriam,  I have to say that the more I read on here, the more I feel so many doctors either don't have a clue or don't care.  Too many trusting patients.  We all need to do our own research and read the label on the medications we are taking.

I totally agree.  I'm always getting doctors saying to me that I shouldn't believe what I read on the Internet, which I find very insulting as I am perfectly able to read academic papers even if I don't have a medical degree!  I also know that our lovely doctors are only given the briefest information about many, many things while I have had time to study just one thing (fluoroquinolones) in great detail.  What I and many others know (including you, I think) is that these drugs should never be prescribed unless it's a life or death situation.

What scares me is that this is just one class of drug - there are so many other drugs or combinations of drugs out there that are doing more harm than good.  We all need to be very careful.  So many young girls on here saying they've been back to their doc for their tenth AB prescription etc!

      Keep up the good work!
