    Hi Teddy!

First of all it's normal to be scared. But it wasn't as bad as I had expected it to be. I'm 56 and am now 7 months post op. I had an epidural with sedation for my surgery and the last thing I remember was saying goodbye to my family then seeing them in the recovery room. i must say that I didn't really have much pain. I was on Percocet and Celebrex in the hospital and took the Celebrex for another month after surgery. I went to physical therapy twice a week for 6 weeks. I just took everything slowly, listened to my doc and never overdid it. Just don't push yourself. I would suggest help for the first 2 weeks. You'll have some strange sensations from the surgery but just look us up and we'll be more than happy to help you along!

I would also suggest getting a sock aid, a grabber, toilet raiser, long handled bath brush and practicing using them. I found these items on Amazon at reasonable prices.

    You'll never regret it!

    Good luck to you!

    Hi Teddy,

When is your op? Read up as much info on this website as you can.

Also ask your surgeon or his assistants what kind of hip you will be having and which way they will operate. The way they gain access to your hip makes a diference to recovery time and position of scar

    Hi Teddy!

I'm Rob, and had my hip replaced a little over 2 weeks ago now.

Welcome to an amazing group of people. You'll really appreciate this little niche in the internet.

Ask any questions you have.. read at your leisure. There's people here on every step of the journey; from diagnosis to more than a year post-operation.

Feel free to share anything you like, and ask away! I know I had a lot of questions my surgeon and their team didn't cover, and was glad I had the support of this community.

Sorry the type of surgery I'm having excapes me at the moment, it start with a p and its the only way my Surgeon stated that he will be able to do it.... kinda sucks I have looked into other ways to perform thr and imo going thru the buttocks is the one that I liked the least, but at this point it really doesnt matter. I have been dealing with hips issues since I was 17.... its at the point where i cant walk, sleep, or sit. Plus now I cant BOWL.

      Tru,

Sounds like Posterior - i.e. from the back of the buttock - which is probly the majority of us, but other methods are sometimes used such as Lateral (side), and Anterior (front).

This is a great place for information and help.  Look at the "Related Information" on the right hand side - this tells you about what to expect, and anaesthetic choices.

I knew nothing about hip replacement and the terms used - but you soon get to know all about it.

Acetabular cup - the bit they screw into your pelvis, the new socket.

Femoral stem - the bit they hammer or glue into the top of your leg bone (Femur).

THR - short for Total Hip Replacement

LTHR / RTHR - Left or Right  THR

Cemented or Uncemented - Type of fixing used, either a special cement to glue them in, or a special coating on the parts to allow the bone to grow 'into' the metal surface to fix it.

Welcome to the forum, hope you have a good replacement.

      Oh Graham,

you are priceless .... and so right .... who would have thought that not even 10 months ago I would have such knowledge about THR and verbage ...and, in my case, new "British English" words which sometimes I have to look up ( like : kip = nap)  -

It is amazing isn't it - this week when I meet the surgeon, I feel like I can have a proper conversation about it.

Oh yes, kip = nap or sleep in UK, but in holland kip = chicken !

Yep and kip=nap=a horse racing term for the best horse of the day. Good old English for confusing us but maybe not our fault nap is derived from the French card game Napoleon where the best hand is shortened and called Nap. Think I'll go and have a lie down.

To make it more confusing for me : kip  chicken in Dutch ...

      oh well ,

      enjoy your kip, colin

Dear Tru - posterior approach, possibility. I had an anterior approach, to explain to you, my normal granny underpants with a side seam, the scar line in just under my side seam line, and runs down into the top of my leg, as I'm a big girl, my scar is probably longer than someone who is not overweight. take a two inch further back and that is posterior approach or thereabouts. Its not around in the ball of your buttock, but more to the side. having been there done this twice over I can say with sincerity, I would do it all over again, as I am only 64, it may happen yet, I have alot of longevity in my family as in late 90's.

    Tru,

    In the Related Information section on the right you will find;

'Hip Joint Replacements' this gives advice on what to expect (being referred for surgery, Pre and post operative care, surgical technique, rehabilitation, complications, and much more)

'Anaesthetic Choices' this explains the anaesthetic.  Spinal, sedation, epidural, general, nerve block, delaying the operation, pain relief, side-effects, and much more (like what happens on the day of, during and after your operation)

Also look in  the pinned "THR - Useful Resources" thread - access it by clicking the "Hip Replacement" link just above "Unfollow this discussion"

One of the most useful I found was at Bonesmart - search "Bonesmart Dislocation risk and 90 degree rule" in your favourite search engine.

    Best Regards

    Graham
