A new article has been published in the Journal of inflammatory research today. It was published on May 30, 2018 and the title of the article is “Inflammation management in acute diverticulitis: current perspectives”. https://www.dovepress.com/inflammation-management-in-acute-diverticulitis-current-perspectives-peer-reviewed-article-JIR
I have read the article and unfortunately it concludes like most other articles on diverticulitis. There is not enough information to make firm recommendations at this time and the field is unfortunately evolving with no one particular standard treatment or set of beliefs.
The only “new” news I could find out Of this article is that this article aggregates some trials and studies that are being done on using certain drugs (mainly mesalazine) to reduce the length of an acute diverticulitis incidents. The evidence for the effectiveness of these drugs are unfortunately not that strong yet and the most “optimistic” study on the use of mesalazine in mild acute diverticulitis was one with an endpoint of resolution of symptoms at 3 MONTHS!!!
That’s way too long for my Liking, I don’t think I would take a drug for that long without knowing whether it would work within 3 months. If there’s not enough proof it works, I’d rather go with current conservative anti-biotic treatment if I suffer from acute diverticulitis again.
