New Diagnosis

Hello, I am new to this site, but from previous readings, I find this site to be a very close knitted, warm hearted and caring group of people.

I am 58 years old, and was newly diagnosed as, 'asthma with emphysema', and categorized listed under COPD. I was informed that my cat scan did not show any damaged lung tissue or air sacks,, so I questioned why he said the word emphysema in the diagnoses, and he said it was due to my PFT (pulmonary function test) being in Severe stage. He said it also refers to, 'Asthma with severe inflammation'. Presently, I am in a wheel chair when going to the doctors, restaurants, shopping, or anything requiring extensive walking, but can walk with out wheel chair only limited distances. I also am on 24/7 oxygen, level 3, but he is presently weaning me off oxygen, for sitting and sleeping purposes, and wants me to use level 2 for anything that requires excertion. He is also prescribing me into their pulmonary rehab, which should begin soon. Also, I am taking, 2 high blood pressure pills a day (tropol xl n lasartan), 10 mg prednisone, sporiva, symbacort, and other meds for varios other ailments. I just began the Symbacort, and already my SOB has been lessened quite a bit.

I am wondering if anyone has this kind of diagnosis and can help me to understand it more? Is it a regressive or progressive type of COPD? Does it retain CO2 possibly? Are their any treatments, similar to coils (lvrs), etc.. in order to reduce its serious effects, in order to make obstruction in airway better? Please give me any information possible....thank you so much!

Dear Richard, thank you so much for your response, and also your advise! Yes, so far my Pulmonologist seems very good. I will be having my first interview for Pulmonary Rehab three days from today. Since I am presently limited in walking distances, she already has told me that she will begin me on machines and exercises that require sitting.
