New grinding noise

Hi this is probably a silly question but I've just today started to get a grinding noise when i walk. Is this what you call bone-on-bone? I'm asking because I'm not getting any pain with it, it's just a very offputting noise and three months ago my Xray showed space still around my hip bone. I will be quite shocked if it is.

Hi Sarah
I felt a grinding of bone on bone but don't remember hearing it. Towards the end things get worse very quickly so 3 months there could be a massive difference to your hip.

As things are now getting worse quickly with your hip problems it may help you make your decision. I saw my surgeon who decided to do op. At that time I was having some bad days some good. My op date was 3 months ahead and for last 2 months I could hardly walk. Every single step was excruciating.
You will get to the point where you know what's best for you

Really? And did you feel you walked like a huge heavy tortoise? I'm quite a slight-built person but my legs feel like lead when i walk. It's quicker to watch paint dry than watching me walk

never thought about it like a tortoise lol but I walked really bad. I waddled more like a duck. I never realised that I was walking on toes on bad leg rather than putting full weight on it. My other half noticed I was putting full weight down heel to toe straight away after op. Also my bad leg was a lot longer than other and I couldn't stand straight always had to bend at knee on bad leg. Again as soon as op was done my legs were same length. Oh and last one.....I could not put my bad leg down to the floor when lying. It just wouldn't go fully down at knee point. First thing I noticed when I woke up both legs were flat to the bed.
All your current problems will be gone. You will have new pain from muscle/tendon repair and scar pain but nowhere near as bad as the pre op pain.

I felt it grinding at certain times at first and then I started hearing it. Once I started hearing it it wasn't too much longer after that the pain was so unbearable I could hardly walk. By the time I got in for my surgery I had femoral head collapse. You don't want it to go that far trust me the pain was absolutely excruciating. Don't wait too long to talk to a surgeon!

Hi Sarah-
No. It is the early symptom of avascular necrosis (AVN). Your quality of life will quickly deteriorate. Get on the schedule of a competent joint replacement specialist, and get that THR.
Hope this helps.

"...What is THAT???"
Fergie, Sandra, and I obviously have experience with crumbling hip joints. There is no cure. It won't get any better; it may get worse in a matter of weeks. The joint has to be replaced. The good news is, it's a nice, mechanical problem, with a nice, mechanical solution. You should do fine with your new joint.

Hi Sarah
Just read up on AVN. This is something that only a consultant could say is the problem, not someone on a forum without medical qualifications !!!!.
Don't be worried. It was wrong to be givenice a prognosis like that !!!!
What you have described is what most of us have experienced and it's just your hip getting worse.
Thankfully you're seeing surgeon next week so he'll put your mind art rest from this comment.

I can feel the clicking and hear it, I will mention it to my surgeon next week. Looks like I don't really have an option but to go along with this newbie, my pain IS getting worse, I'm not sleeping much now. Sitting is fine, lying down is the pits. I dread bedtime. Ah well, will let you know how I get on on Tuesday.

Hi Sarah
Yes do let us know. I think you'll be fine with the newbie if you feel you can trust him. I have to be honest and tell you that I didn't check info on my surgeon beforehand but I was referred to a specialist orthopaedic hospital which is renowned here in UK and some places abroad so I just assumed it was going to be ok.
I feel for you in pain now but know it will soon be gone.
