New member having surgery

Hello everyone, first I'd like to say how happy I am to have found this group tonight. As you all know this disease is not easy to talk about and to find people that have gone through or are currently going through HS is amazing. Anyway, I've been dealing with HS since my early teenage years (I'm almost 39 now). I am currently dealing with HS on the side of my groin area, right where my underwear rests. I've been dealing with this particular HS flare up for almost a year now. Several rounds of antibiotics and draining it several times have not gotten rid of it. I will be having surgery on April 7th. Has anyone had surgery in this area? If so, what was the recovery like? Thank tou in advance.

I have had HS for 45 years!! Learned to live with it but I am obviously not as bad as most people on here. My lumps only come up in my groin and like you rub on under ware but any one eruption will only last about 6 weeks each time and I now get them only about 4 times a year since menopause. When I was your age they came up monthly The doctors have been useless over the years not even knowing what it was. I was told "ingrowing pubic hair follicles"! Have learned more on this site in the past couple of months than I ever learned from hospitals and doctors!!
There will be someone on here that can advise you. Good luck.

It was a drainage proceedure, and done as an emergency op at hospital as very strong anti biotics weren't budging this flare up this time. I was discharged the following day and was left with a 5cm long and 3 cm deep wound which needs changing and packing everyday by a district nurse. For the first few days it was bloodly painful, but I am changing my own dressings now and its healing very well and I dont feel any pain from it at all. I hope to god that this will be the last flare up I have as I am looking into giving up cigarettes and asking for an allergy test to be carried out just in case I am allergic to say, the Dealy Nightshade family (Potatoes, Tomatos, Red Bell peppers and tobacco). I didnt shave as I dont around this area due to suffering ingrowing hairs which doesnt help. I do trim but never shave. You can get plasters that are easy to remove without painfuly fulling on the delicate skin and hairs in that area, make sure you ask the surgen or your nurses, they will have done this many times and unfortunately this is more common than you think. Wish you all the best for your op, its a very simple proceedure and the recovery all depends on the size of the wound you are left with. Keep us posted :-) xx

One thing, the doctor said they couldn't operate if it was inflamed because of the risk of the infection spreading and possibly c ausing further damage. Mind you they had to under a general anaesthetic for one on the top of my inner thigh a few years ago coz it was a monster. So if it is very big and inflamed they should do it under a general rather than a local. Good luck with it. x

Oh forgot to add - the big one was slightly painful afterwards but nothing like it had been before! It had to be packed by a nurse from inside out to a few weeks. I was told to stay off my feet as much as possible to allow it to heal. x
