New mole at age 30.

So, while bathing I noticed a new mole near my knee. I can not be sure that it is brand new, but it hasn't always been there. I've read new moles at this point in life are suspicious and should always be seen by a doctor. So, I will call and make an appointment when the office opens up tomorrow. It is a small area, slightly larger than a pin point mark. Dark brown in color, maybe black. Any insight on what may cause a new mole? What concerns I should have?
