New pain

Hi all , I am now roughly 14 weeks post lthr and was doing really well , mostly walking unaided, using cane for stairs only. Took a 2 hour round trip flight to Las Vegas and back and  now all of a sudden I am having sharp pain to my left outer hip , ice and rest does not seem to alleviate....my leg feels fine with no change in mobility just this sharp pain ...should I be concerned 😳, I feel like this is more than just the "healing process"

    Hi Kells

If you think it's more than healing pain then you should get it checked out if only to put your mind at rest.

Please describe in detail the location of the pain. Where does it start, how far does it go down the leg?

Hi Jodi, my pain is a sharp, almost constant pain that is located beside my incision scar(anterior) out to the Hip and radiates down towards my glutes , its mostly when I am laying down or sitting for a while and then I have to stand up to relieve the pain.

My incision was on the side, so I'm not sure where the incision is on an anterior surgery, where is it? The front of your leg, the side of your leg, and by glutes, do you mean your butt cheeks? I'm not getting a good visual on where the pain is, sorry.

Hi, sorry for not painting a good picture...the scar from anterior is on very top of thigh , the pain is mostly in the outer hip area now and it is swollen , it feels very tight and sore when I walk 😞

Thank you. So your incision is on the front of your thigh then, not the side?

I'm concerned because you say it is swollen & you are not getting relief. Is the side of your hip red also? If you can't crane your neck to see it well, take a picture & look at the picture. Redness with swelling is typically an indication of inflammation associated with infection.

If it's not red just swollen & sore it could be tendonitis of your IT Band. You can look up It Band tendonitis & see if you have similar symptoms. The thing is they cut off the top of your leg bone and jam a prosthetic into the remaining bone so it is not simply the hip inside that has been operated on, it is also the top of your leg bone. Perhaps it was not sufficiently healed, the prosthetic had not finished knitting itself into that leg bone. I would call the doctors office, describe in very good detail exactly where the pain is located and see if they want you to come in.

Sudden swelling after 14 weeks that isn't abating I think is concerning and you would be wise to contact your doctor.

Did you do a lot of walking in Vegas? I've been there a few times and we walked miles. Just wonder if you've overdone it a bit. But I agree that perhaps you need to get it checked out by your doctor or physio. Good luck

    Best Wishes

Thanks Renee, I have been off work now for a couple of days and have been resting, laying down and icing as much as I can; the pain is still there but has subsided some. Not sure why but it seems to be worse when lying down and wakes me up in my sleep(ugh)...yes I do believe something during this trip caused this new pain either the long car ride, walking on strip, small plane seats, or uncomfortable beds...think I will stay at home for a while...lol
