New pain after 6 weeks dynamic hip screw op

So it’s six weeks after the dynamic hip screw op and I hadn’t taken painkillers for over two weeks when yesterday I developed an ache then a throbbing pain in my left buttock, more to the side of my leg that in the middle of my bottom cheek. Not done anything different apart from go out using one crutch instead of two. Had to take strong medication to sleep last night. While area feels sore today and I’m terrified I’ve dislodged the screw or it’s moved, I’d been doing so well, now I’m due to start physio tomorrow at my local hospital but feel I shouldn’t in case something is wrong. Could the hip screw have moved? It’s a horrible type pain, sickly. Not due for consultant follow up for 10 days so can’t discuss it with him til then. Or have I just overdone it? The only other thing I did differently was to walk a few stairs ‘normally’ rather than one leg up and then the other, I just wanted to see if it hurt which it didn’t. Only did about four! Don’t want to start taking painkillers again.

Sometimes I get pains and think what have I done, I am 19 mths postop and yes I do things I should not and then wonder why I have pain.

I would recommend you go to physio as they may find nothing and just massage the area and they do have a hot line to the consultant.

Hope all goes well... and remember one step at a time.

I'd say using the one crutch (and different stair gait) has caused you to use muscles and tendons that you hadn't since op.

I had the same thing when I moved to a cane. I thought perhaps I moved to a cane too early and went back to crutches. The pain subsided.

I am now using a cane 7 weeks post op.

    Vanessa,

I went out last week (week 6) with one crutch for my daily walk, thought I could manage it but was in agony when I got back home. Pain down the back of leg and the inside of the leg, went straight to bed (4.30pm) to rest hip and stayed there till morning when luckily it went back to normal. I think you may have over done it, I limp without support so I am now going to use 2 ctutches when out walking until the limping stops. Tell the physio they should know whether to continue with the exercises.

Hi Vanessa I am 12 weeks post op and the last few days have had awful pain. I sat on a lower seat for the first time. Comfortable enough when I was there but my knee isn’t strong enough to propel me back up. I had a similar thing at 7 weeks when the specialist suggested I start walking unaided . I went to my GP as the pain was so unbearable. He said the same as Yabut. Using muscles not used in a while. Go back to crutches and try again in four or five days. So now every time I find myself in pain I take a step back for a few days. Seems to help.
