New pain started

I had a full hip replacement, from falling! I was doing really well' started walking without a cane! Then 3 days ago a new pain started , like a cramping pain when walking! I am so worried about it' not sure I feel like I'm going back now, is this something I should be worried that there is something wrong? As this happened to anyone else? Worried sick about it?

Cramping is far from unusual. Have a word with your GP - there are meds that can help until you get back to normal. The injury to your muscles during the surgery, combined with the limiting nature of your pre-surgery muscles, can simply mean that your muscles are protesting at their use. The other obvious alternative is that you've let your diet go a bit - both magnesium and sodium deficiencies can contribute towards cramps, and people often lose their appetite after surgery so don't get enough of one or both. Something as simple as upping your salt intake temporarily can help.

When in doubt, check it out. Just for piece of mind. Strange healing process. Bet it is nothing major

    Dear Jocelyn

How disappointing Can you full us in,on how long ago you had the surgery and where exactly is the pain and does it happen only when walking?

If you are having actual muscle cramp then drinking tonic water can be effective due to the quinine or take quinine tablets.

    Cheers Richard

I am amazed to hear that people lose their interest in eating after surgery. I had the surgery two weeks ago at eight fifteen and was in recovery fully alert and ready to eat at ten.  They didn't have me scheduled for lunch up in the ward , so i had to request one and  wait longer than other people but I have never skipped a beat food wise.

Me neither - but apparently it is a common side effect. I could have murdered for a full English the next morning!

Yes I remember having a not too bad sausage and bean casserole about an hour after my surgery...... Though back at home I did have a smaller appetite for a while.

    hi jocelyn,

warm welcome to this forum of hippies where we share our personal stories and experiences ..

we would love to know more about you ... when was your THR surgery for instance ..

I agree with Beth that cramp is not unusual post-op THR surgery ... I benefitted from drinking tonic water, others had medication prescribed, like a muscle relaxant -

    Please come back, okay

    big warm hug

    renee
