I'm so frustrated as my GP has referred me back to see my consultant at a hospital in Cardiff, but i had to complete an on line questionnaire, sent from the hospital, received a letter from this telling me that I will have wait for another questionnaire in 2 years time to determine if I will be seen. Dont know what to do, I gave the letter to my GP Surgery expecting a phone call but of course didn't receive one. I'm back to so much pain in my non operated hip, has anyone else had this.

    Hi Daffy

Not heard of this system at all 2 years is ridiculous go back to your GP and ask them to sort it out

In the meantime keep popping the painkillers and have a good Christmas

    Hi Daffi

Is Cardiff the logical place for you to have your surgery or is there another hospital nearer to you. I would call your GP and get even a telephone appointment and explain the situation. Under NHS rules you should have some choice in where you are referred although I'm not sure how that operates in different NHS Trust regions.

What I can say is that there is tremendous pressure on the NHS to reduce elective surgery referrals so that resources can be diverted to other areas. I know that's not helpful to you but at least have another go at your GP and try to get a referral to another unit.

Just Google "National Joint Registry" to find the website for all the UK surgeons that carry out hip operations - maybe there is another one local to you that you can ask to be referred to.

    Hi Daffi

How frustrating when you are in pain. I think the questionnaire might be the Oxford hip scoring system. If you google this and was in the news a few months back that in an effort to ration surgery you need a specific score or lower...i have a feeling it was 20.dont quote me though., I came out at 14. But allegedly if you say you dont have problems sleeping it excludes you. . have a google oxford hip score hip rationing. It isnt good and if it is causing impact in your life that should be that deciding factor along with your surgeon. also my surgeon advised me not to wait and continue to deteriorate and I did wait and i was in pretty bad shape after an 18months wait after I finally decided to go ahead. so waiting another 2 years isnt going to help matters. Sorry to hear you are in pain. I hope you get it resolved...and the suggestion to look in a different area too worth investigating. Take care

Actually although I completed the oxford hip score questionnaire before and 3 months after surgery it wasnt used to determine if I was to get surgery my surgeon made that decision, but I was paying attention to news reports as I was waiting on my op so I read was used for ratiining. It was used more for an idea of what I could and couldnt do and the improvements afterwards.

Your situation doesn't sound very fair to me. It sounds like your local hospital is way behind with their waiting list and your are being fobbed off as not in a bad enough condition for the OP.

I saw my Gp when my condition got too painful and he realised I was bad enough to be referreed. I knew of a good consultant in a BMI private centre 30 miles away and my doctor asked for me to be referred there. Much to my delight the consultant I wanted said yes and here I am nearly 3 weeks post op and doing well. Dont be put off asking for a referral to another nhs or private hospital. The private hospitals still get paid if they treat NHS patients so find out the names of good consultants nearish to yourself and ask to be referred. I understand that the government has said that private hospitals can be used if the NHS one close to you have long waiting lists.

    Good luck anyway/
