New steroid research

Hi all. I was just doing a bit of research online when I came across an article I thought might be of interest to us all. Apparently, although doctors have known for ages that steroids reduce inflamation, they didn't know how they did it! Recently a Dr Li and team have discovered the answer. This means that work may finally be able to start on finding an alternative to Pred, without the side effects! Great news, although probably too late for us! Hopefully our children and grandchildren may not have to suffer, in the unfortunate event of them needing steroid type treatment. If you want to read the article, I googled 'steroids new research' then selected 'medindia' then 'new trick steroids use to suppress inflamation'.

It is actually just one bit of the puzzle and what they have found they say is for bacteria-induced inflammation: the pred blocks an enzyme that is part of developing the inflammation. If that is also involved in developing the inflammation we have then it is significant for us - but otherwise it is more peripheral for us. It will, however, help patients with chest infections - such as asthmatics - who need pred to get the inflammation down.

It is quite exciting though - but whether Big Pharma will think it will make enough money for them is another thing. Knowing how it would work is a long long way from having a safe substance that will do the job and that is where the risk is for business. Clinical trials are VERY costly items...

This is fascinating.  I had read somewhere that consuming fermented foods, like sauerkraut, kimchi, and their ilk, has helped some arthritis patients.  Knowing what we now do about the importance of maintaining healthy gut microbes I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of hidden infection was at the bottom of a lot of PMR and similar diseases.
