For the past 5days or more I have been getting throbbing/pulsating sensations on my surgical hip leg ...mostly on my thigh but sometimes on buttocks n bottom leg...n my foot when I flex it seems to have a tight band around it....Has anyone else had this experience????Really concerned it might be a clot or dvt.

I am two years in with my left hip replacement and I have had ongoing constant, pain, throbbing, sensation of heat, and weakness that goes from my butt, down my outer thigh to my knee, and down my leg to my foot... If I rub on my out knee area or leg, it is painful to the touch. Feels like it is bruised... Sounds very similar to what you are experiencing. I have had an x-ray and MRI and all is fine. I am going in for right hip replacement on June 8. I sure hope I can get back to normal... or at least less pain!! The only thing that helps somewhat is high doses of ibuprophen which I know is not good for you.

Have you ever been checked for a condition called meralgia paresthetica?

How long post op are you?

I was going to say it could be muscle spasms but glad to see you have a phone consultation with your surgeon. I had something very similar at 4 weeks post op and it passed. Was part of soft tissue healing. Important to walk and keep leg elevated.

if you suspect a clot, you must seek medical help as soon as possible!

have you tried to put your legs up (higher than heart) and taken aspirin?

    do you walk regularly?

    Hi Cecila,

I get a throbbing in my shin of the, had it before hip op and still get it now two years post op. I also had a PE seven weeks (clot in the lung). I got short of breath when out walking, when I looked backed, I had a strange pain shoot across the abdominal twice, before it it the lung.

Clots do not always come from the calf, saying that, it does not sound like a clot, but, ring your doctor and ask.

Jen the throbbing is not on on calf usually on mid thigh n other areas of leg....Did you get dvt 7 weeks after surgergy?

An how did they diagnose it?

    Cecilia,

Blood clots can form anywhere in the body, not always the calf (dvt), mine came from the hip, a strange pain shot across my abdomen twice, then getting short of breath when walking, about a week later I had a sharp pain in my side under the breast, I went to the GP, he sent me for an x-ray and said he was worried it was a PE due to having hip op. That night, as I was getting ready for bed and was in agony and had to call an ambulance, I told the paramedic the GP said it could be a clot but, he thought it was an infection, he must have told the hospital that, as I had to sit there for four hours!

I do not think throbbing is a clot as normally you will get pain of some sort, maybe get hot and/or swelling. If you are seriously bothered go to A &E, it is the ideal time as they are very quite at the moment and you can get seen really quickly

Thanks Jen....I'm going to the dr. tomorrow to be evaluated n possible screening for clots.
