New to all this. Where to start?

Good afternoon, all,

I am fairly new to this world.  I'm about 50.  I've been reading through this forum about all the different interventions available to treat BPH.  I had no idea there were so many options out there.

The last couple of years, I've slowly experienced worsening symptoms.  I went from sleeping through the night up until a couple of years ago to waking up to use the bathroom once or twice a night a few times a week...and have had an uptick in that recently.  I am looking for a urologist so I can get a start can figure out a proper diagnosis.  Are there any specific questions I should ask from the start?  Is there a standard treatment hierarchy that most urologists go through?  Are most of the options like PAE, HoLEP, FLA, and others usually reserved for those who have tried several different medications first?

Mainly...what advice would you give to someone who is just starting this journey?  What do you wish you knew when you first started?

Thanks so much.

Have been on alfuzozin for a number of years for moderate size prostate. Then due to returning problems 5 yrs later also took saw palmetto for 2 years due to chronic prostatitis or uti, or both. Then due to problems returning now also taking nettle leaf pills and so far (3 weeks) and symptoms have pretty much gone for now. Using a powerful external body massager on the affected area can help bouts of pain/problems. I am thinking however that I may need stronger prescription pills from the GP in the future. I am 47 years old.

Re:  "Using a powerful external body massager on the affected area can help bouts of pain/problems."   - could you please provide full details?

Last night (rather 1am today), the cab driver suggested a massage chair to unblock my blocked indwelling cathether. He had experiences with blocked urinary, from torture in the Middle East.  I already tried jumping up and down, massages my privates, bending, to no avail.

Dan, are you considering one of the surgical alternatives?  Good luck finding relief.

Re the silver bullet search .. what I'm doing is searching for prostate bph on the online marketplaces.  From the product hits, I then sort, "by Avg customer review".  Then, read reviews, looking for the golden nugget(s).

Here's just one example of a silver bullet find -- lookup the video, Karen Allen from the movie Indiana Jones talks about Lyme Disease.  It's 54 minutes long.  She found the silver bullet almost when she had given up hope completely.
