New to Barrett's oesophagus

Hi I was wondering if anyone can shed any light for me I had an endoscopy on Monday just gone where biopsies were taken so I understand I need to wait for those , my doctor stated I have severe damage to my oesophagus and mild damage to my duodenum bulb and said he will tell me more when biopsy results are back. However being very curious I've obviously read his findings in the pack he sent away with me, the bit I need help understanding is in the diognosis it states Barrett's oesophagus fold starts at 36cm c5m3 , can anyone help me understand this please

    Hi

Barrett's won't actually be confirmed until the biopsy results come back.

Hopefully they'll show no signs of dysplasia (which could be the strat of a progression towards cancer but most of us will live with non-dyslastic Barrett's without worry.

Measurements of Barrett's segments aren't easy. They are recorded looking at markings along the tube of the endoscope and recorded at the teeth.

The 36cm is the distance from the incisors to the lower limit of what was visually determined as possible Barrett's.

The c5m3 is the "Prague classification" used to identify the extent of the suspect area - although the figures may have been muddled?

The C number refers to the depth of the circumferential ring and, because Barrett's is not usually a regular band, the M number refers to the maximum length of any protrusions. c5m3 would appear to show a band of 5 cm width having a maximum height of 3 cm - which doesn't sound right - the other way round is far more likely: c3m5 (a 3cm band around the interior of the oesophagus with "tongues" extending to 5cm).

The oesophagus is a flexible and the action of pushng and pulling the scope back and forth will appear to stretch or shrink it. Add t that the fact that the markings along the endoscope may only be every 2 cm requiring estimation by the endoscopist, will show they are not necessarily very accurate.

Learn more by visiting the Barrett's Wessex website (linked to via the listing on the right) or by visiting www BarrettsWessex org uk.

The "Journey" tab on the site will lead you through a primer for newly diagnosed patients - "from diagnosis to treatment". And the "Down With Acid" tab will take you to the separate site of the Down With Acid encyclopaedia of everything to do with acid and reflux.

I was diagnosed last year Im 1cm. Make sure you've got adequate PPI cover. I have to take 60 mgs of Lansoprazole. I dont like the idea of it but then I dont want to go on to get cancer either.
