hi I just had Nissan Fundoplication about 12 days ago. I am very surprised at how slow the healing and strength gain is going. I see now this is going to be a long road to recovery. I am now on the soft and moist diet. I have already lost 8 ibs. Getting food in is challenging, such tiny amounts. I will keep you posted.

It does get better BUT.....  had this op around 13 years ago. Initially was a completely new swallowing regime. At start difficult to swallow anything but over the ensuing weeks it did get better and better. After about a month did get things wrong by having a lunch in a Thai restaurant which included a pice of batter covered beef. Probably didn't chew it sufficiently and result was it tore something and within seconds was bringing up blood. To be fair doctor wasn't too worried and episode passed. After that continued to progress and had 12 good years.

Unfortunately although not told at the time (but probably wouldn't have made a different decision ) the success of the Op can ( not always) lessen after 10 years or so when your ability to swallow weakens. This has happened to me and now I suffer from a different problem in that sometimes food swallowed does not travel as it should into my stomach and gets stuck above the stomach entrance. Do have spells of feeling OK but increasingly get chest discomfort and spasms which sometimes are severe. Taken about 2 years under NHS referral to reach this conclusion and have now opted to have a procedure to loosen the stomach wrap created by the Nissan Fundoplication in hope my swallowing will improve BUT been warned this may also see the return to a greater or lesser extent of my symptoms experienced prior to the Fundoplication. Feels bit like being between a rock and a hard place but my thinking is that if my swallow power has weakened as I get older it will only continue to get worse. Also I believe less Fundoplications are offered nowadays because drug control of acidity/reflux is preferred route and hopefully this will minimise any worsening of my original symptoms.  If anyone has any thoughts on this would be pleased to receive them?

Anywy hopefully you will enjoy the same progress I had over the coming weeks but would stress avoid strenuous physical activity for a good few weeks including lifting/ pushing etc which excercises chest and stomach muscles. About 4 weeks after without thinking I pushed a broken down car and did myself no good at all.

I'm due to go in to have a Nissen on 5th Feb and have been reading up on the post op diet. How are you getting on with it?

I am now 14 days post-op for the Nissan Fundoplication. You diet will change drastically. I was on clear liquids for10 days consisting of jello, ensure, broth, anything you can see through. Very small amounts at a time, I had no appetite at all. This surgery takes time to adjust to, try and be patient. I was then moved onto the soft moist diet. Ex: scrambled egg, yogurt, ice cream, soft fish, mashed potatoes and small pieces of selected protein. No carbs are allowed. You will get full after 2 bites and I already have lost 10 lbs. it takes time for your brain to get used to the change in eating. Good luck!
