Hello. I'm sorry if this is going to be a long account of my ordeal but please bear with me. Over the last 3 years I have been suffering with various mouth problems which various doctors and my dentist failed to diagnose. It all started with a large white patch on the left side of the roof of my mouth and then my upper left gum became inflamed yet it never affected my back teeth. As time went by my gums ached and started bleeding so the dentist told me to use an electric brush instead. I now have receding gums and still the dentist won't take the problem serious. Over the weeks things went from bad to worse. The inside of my bottom lip became red and swollen and little bumps appeared and it has now spread to my top lip. The doctor claimed that my lip was swollen because I had overactive salivary glands and that there wasn't anything to be done. A few weeks ago I got a virus and he put me on antibiotics which got rid of the virus but ulcers appeared in my mouth almost over night. Over the last 2 weeks large bumps appeared on either side of my tongue and the insides of my cheeks are also inflamed. My throat is sore and feels tight so my doctor gave me hydrocortisone tablets but they did nothing to help any of my symptoms. The doctor seems to think that the markings on the side of my tongue might suggest lichen planus. I can feel that something is seriously wrong with me because the left side of my body feels very weak and it trembles for no reason. I have asked to be referred to the oral surgeon at hospital for a biopsy to confirm the doctors diagnosis. Does any of this sound familiar and has anyone had it affect one side of your body? I have heard that infections within the body can cause trembling and weakness. Is there a specific type of specialist that I should ask to see? Please help as I'm terrified that this is some serious auto-immune disease. Thanks.

HI, i
I'm really sorry to hear about your ordeal, it sounds awful. I myself was diagnosed with OLP a few years ago with similar symptoms in my mouth though not with weakness of the body. I was sent for a biopsy which confirmed what both my doctor and dentist suspected. Aftet trying variius treatments, mouthwashes and steroid rinses i have found that turmeric helps, I take two double stregnth tablets daily and it is hardly noticable now, just a bit sensitive to spicy foods. There is also a Facebook group called Turmeric Users Group and it tells you how to make a paste with dried turmeric, olive oil and black pepper, thats also very good. Good luck with it, I hope you get results.

Me too. Sores developing after eating spicy foods and Ranch dressing. The dentist prescribed deximethosone which helped but more recently it seems I have better luck with Therabreath cool mint mouth rinse. If i rinse my mouth and floss after eating those foods, it seems to keep it at bay. I do take turmeric with black pepper capsules but alone they dont seem to help. I also take a probiotic. Been with OLP almost two years.
They tried telling me to use the electric tooth brush but it made things worse. I use the softest toothbrush I can find and gently brush and use waterpik on low setting in addition to flossing.

Hi Gill. Thanks for the speedy response and the advice. I will definitely be checking out the Tumeric Users group and I'll also buy the tablets. I'm so desperate for some relief and peace of mind that I'm willing to try most things. All the best to you and thanks again for the advice.

you need to see an oral surgeon or a periodontist. This is not a simple dental issue. My dentist referred me to a periodontist who did biopsies, diagnosed the LP and devised a treatment plan. I also have recession. I was told not to use an electric toothbrush. I use a soft
( GUMM brand) brush. PLEASE speak up and advocate for treatment. You need to insist. I have had great success with soft plastic trays that were made for me by my periodontist and i fill with a perscription cream ( will look for the name and post it. ) I am very sorry that you are going through such discomfit and stress. There is always someone here to listen to you vent, scream and cry.
