New to Propranolol

Hi all,

I suffer from anxiety and my doctor has prescribed 40mg of Propranolol to be taken once a day. He said it would reduce my heart rate as a side effect however said it would be fine as I naturally had a fast sinus rhythm. I do feel my heart rate has slowed however I feel like I'm not getting enough oxygen into my lungs and am gasping for my breath? Is this normal?

It's my second day and I feel werid. It says on the leaflet with the medicine that would should be weary if you're a smoker. I never smoked alot probably 5-6 rollies a day. My doctor never mentioned my smoking so I have just stopped. I don't know whether that would make a difference?

I am feeling drowsy and my vision is hazy. Is this something that wears off? I'm worried as I'm back to work Monday and cannot be going in all over the place.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

    Hi Sophie!

your symptoms sound just like mine were on the once a day 40mg dose of propanolol.  Not nice at all and the GPs don't really seem to connect with what you are experiencing.  I now take 10mg 4 times a day which works so much better.  I still feel more than normally tired but, for the most part, the other nasty and somewhat frightening symptoms have disappeared.

      Thanks Pam,

That's very reassuring, I will see how I go and maybe ask for lower dosage more times a day.

      Thanks again, hope you're well.

    Hi sophie

Ive recently been given propanolol to combat side effects of fluoxetine as I had really bad jitters from it which it has helped.    haven't had breathlessness but have felt the tiredness.  I was told to take 10mg at a time through the day too so that maybe worth a try for you? If in doubt consult your doctor though.

Hope it helps you so you start feeling better soon

      Hi Vix,

Thanks for this. I was worried about smoking and taking the propranolol at the same time.

I have just stopped I'm too afraid to smoke at the same time. Now that's me being a wuss!

      Thanks for your help

    Hi,

I was taken this drug for a high heart rate due to hyperthyroidism.   I developed fluid in my legs.  I went to a walk in after my legs got itchy and started to bleed.  After ruling everything else out, kidneys, and liver.  They asked how long I was taken this new drug.  I told them a week.  They said I had a mild reaction to it.  They then asked if I had trouble breathing and I said yes.  They asked if this started before the swelling I  the legs but they started at the same time.  Hen they told me it's a command reaction and doctors don't know it.   I would suggest talking to your doctor in case it could be fluid.   Not saying it, but you don't want go through what I did.  I stopped taking this drug over six months ago and I still have some swelling and bleeding on my legs.  They told me it could take a year to stop.  They didn't want me to keep taking it even though in some people it stops with more cause my legs where five times the size they should be.
