Hi. Im 42, recently quit smoking 24 days ago, been having what doc says is acid reflux. Just got put on Zantac. Prilosic made me dizzy. Whats bothering me is this dull pain in center of chest. It goes away after taking meds. But ive even went to ER to rule out heart attack. Please tell me is this feeling normal with gerd/reflux? Ive never had this before? Is it because i stopped smoking? Im very anxious about it all. Any advice is appreciated.

The pain in the chest is something I have lived with for so long. It could in fact be sharp and chronic. It feels like a sharp jab in the chest just before the stomach. It's the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. Your BP and heart rate could rise too. Indeed doctors sometimes find it hard to distinguish. Typically they go on cardiac treatment efforts at first presentation before realising it is gastro. Your doctor should give you advice on other steps you could take like sleeping inclined and eating small meals and avoiding late meals etc.

It could be a bit of oesophagitis as well as reflux if you used to smoke. Try and avoid fatty and acidic foods and drinks. Carbonated drinks, caffeine and sugar can also give you reflux. If it gets really bad ask to try another ppi tablet for a short time, they work so much better than zantac. You can also take antacid tablets like rennie at the same time as zantac if you need to.
