My name is Shelly and I am a nurse (RN) and I have Hashimoto's thyroid disease. The antibodies are used to diagnose Hashimoto's auto-immune disease which attacks your thyroid via the protein antibodies in your immune system.
It lets the doctor know if you do have Hashimoto's disease which can make your thyroid Hyper or Hypo or swing back and forth. It is an indicator test. it can take a few days to do.
Hyper thyroid disease can make you nervous, anxious, lose weight fast, and have bulging eyes, feeling HOT.
So in short, it is a test to help diagnose your thyroid condition. If you are on replacement hormone it may need to be adjusted after your blood levels are back. I hope this helps.

If your antibodies are normal, that is good.
it means you do not have an autoimmune problem where your body attacks the thyroid. It also means you do not have Lupus since they usually look for that also in that test.
If you have a Hyperthyroid problem, it means you may be making too much thyroid hormone.
Now, in some of us the body does make too much and later things change and that is why they need to test you again in say 3 to 6 months. Doctors like to test the blood several times in a given period of time, to be sure the reading is not an error and it helps them diagnose it correctly.
Having too much thyroid is not good, because it can cause you a fast heart rate, make you feel palpitations, make you sickly thin, and cause headaches, and muscle pains.
The body has to be just right! So the doctor needs to find out WHY you are making too much hormone.

Well if it still shows Hyper (High) after blood work, they can look for a cause. Some people have a family history of it. If symptoms get worse or so bad that it is bothering you they can remove a part of the thyroid gland and see if that slows it down. The gland does not grow back so if they did that, it would be permanent. Removing a lobe of the thyroid may make you back to normal.
Does anyone else in your family have Hyperthyroidism? Are you on any medication that would cause the gland to go high? Do you have any other health problems?
Be well, Shelly
