Hi all, really not happy, went in today to have my operation to fix my umbilical hernia, got there and booked in,but when I saw and spoke to the surgeon, who wasn’t the surgeon I was under for the op,he blantantly refused to do my operation, because of me being overweight,he said the risks are higher to have the op,then to have the hernia itself,my boyfriend who was with me,even told him that he’s seen me doubling over in pain,I’ve spoken to my doctors surgery about today, and I’ve got to wait till the hospital send my doctor a letter explaining why this surgeon I saw today won’t operate, absolutely fuming and upset about being refused again, especially when I was in the hospital waiting to go down to theatre, any help and advice will be much appreciated,I’m back to square one again

Thanks Teresa,I’m going to keep fighting this till a surgeon will do my op,like you I’m overweight,I’m about 18 and a half stone, which I’m classed as obese, according to the hospital,I’m glad you was able to have it done, every operation comes with risks,I know that, knowing that you are overweight like me and was given the operation, has given me a little bit of hope, that I will be able to have the op,just got to find the right surgeon, did you get refused at all before you were given the op,I’ve been refused twice now,1st time was the 1st specialist I saw,2nd time was yesterday and the surgeon refusing

I completely understand what the surgeon said,he wasn’t the surgeon I was under for the op,i was seen by this surgeon because of a cancellation,so tbh he probably wasn’t prepared enough, also this surgeon is only going on one ct scan, which was done 8 months ago,a lot has changed in that time,I’ve learnt from the 2nd specialist, who agreed that the pains I have and continue to get on and off are my hernia, and he agreed to put me through for surgery, the fact that when the 2nd specialist was examining my stomach I screamed in pain numerous times, thanks for your help,I’ll just have to wait and see what my actual surgeon says and go from there

I was told a long time ago I had a hiatal hernia and it needed to be out so I was sent to a specialist and he just laughed at me and said the only way I’d get that done was to go out of state and have the bariactric surgery with the hernia surgery. I figured just a money gimmick since I had insurance.

Hi jo sorry you were mucked about like that, the nhs don’t seem to care,I sadly lost my mum September last year, she was 73,had numerous medical problems, but what took her life was her large umbilical hernia, mine isn’t large, but it’s it’s causing me pain on and off,for a year now,the 2nd specialist I saw who agreed to the op,told me that my hernia is definitely what’s causing me pain, just by examining me,he said that it’s tender,it’s grown from 1.5cm to 2cm,it’s not reducible,so it’s slowly going to keep growing,he was fully on my side, whereas the 1st specialist didn’t think it was my hernia causing me pain, she though possibly ibs, which it isn’t

The surgeon is quite accurate that this surgery is at higher risk in overweight people, but....you have all the rights to be fuming!

It is NOT OK to have a doctor turn down a patient like that, on the very day of the surgery.

I guess being overweight didn’t just happen overnight, right?

So why the hell did they waste your time, scheduled surgery and turned it down?

Of course they are right to warn you of the increased risks, it’s in the rights of the surgeon to refuse carrying out a surgery he fells too risky, but this is why there are pre-assessements and appointments!

It’s somewhat tipical of the NHS nowadays, all information goes round letters and electronic documents that nobody really read carefully. If being overweight is a red flag for the procedure, it should have been discussed with you and made clear that there could be a chance of surgey not going ahead.

Bottom line, they were supposed to talk to you ahead of scheduling the surgery. Totally unacceptable service, even if the reason for denying surgery is in your every interest.

I agree David but cash is king, my last surgery had a serious mesh installed, I was supposed to be almost bullet proof but 18 months on and been extra careful as it was my 5th, still no joy

1/2 the doctors out there are money grabers

Hi David thank you,I completely agree, for me to travel to the hospital, get booked in ready and waiting to be called down for my surgery,to suddenly be told by the surgeon no he’s not doing my op,the stress I’ve been under to get this far, then turned away,p****d me off and has upset me immensely,I’ve got depression and anxiety, have for 3 years, they know this, and still put me though this

Agree Mike but this is the NHS, doctors don’t make more if they do more surgeries.

Oh wait a second... Jenny you’re in the UK right?

The public healthcare system is slow but free, some doctors do also work in private hospitals where they get clearly paid more for every single procedure, but when they are doing operation under the NHS, they won’t push the surgery to get extra cash. Sure you get knife happy docs, but in this case the doc is right not wanting to do surgery on an overweight patient. Thing is, the system failed Jenny, she should have been advised on the riskes prior to scheduling the procedure, and also told the surgeon has every right to refuse carrying out procedure they think are too risky for that patient.

Not disagreeing with surgeon’s choice, but really poor service from NHS.

I am talking umbilical hernia and requiring the sixth and lots of research have established that until I lose weight I am wasting my time as it returns between 18 & 24 months

The best advice I can give you is make sure you wear an umbilical brace it helps a lot
