New varicose vein after 8 days

Had my 2nd stripping surgery done 8 days ago. The first one on the same leg was 15 years ago. It was a rather large/bumpy vein that ran from my thigh over my knee where it was especially pronounced. Recovery has been mostly fine. I've been walking a lot and wearing the compression stocking. Haven't had the follow-up with the doctor yet. Its due in a few days. I noticed where the vein was really pronounced on my knee, there is still a bulge, lumpiness, that looks almost like a the old/new varicose vein. It is especially pronounced when I bend my knee. Worried that they either didn't remove the entire vein or the one has already formed. Is that possible? Too anxious now to wait for the follow-up.

Hi, after my op (some 3 weeks ago now) I did notice some lumpiness albeit not as bad as yours appears to be however I take some comfort from the fact that the bruising can also take the form of lumps and I understand this will then disappear over time. My understanding is that varicose veins take a long time to form (think 20 years in my case) so unlikely to be a new one. I also think it very unlikely that they would not remove the entire vein as I think they "pull" them out so difficult to leave part behind! The vein becomes enlarged as a result of a valve (or valves) not working correctly and thus the blood "sinks" back down into the vein and the pressure slowly makes it larger. As a result it is hardly going to be a new one! If your follow up is in a few days I don't think I would worry too much as these things seem to develop slowly! Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I suppose I would be quite unlucky if the new vein has already developed. I read that often the residual veins are present after the stripping surgery which can easily be treated with sclerotherapy. Again, it would be quite unfortunate as I can't afford sclerotherapy now. I just hope that it is some sort of vein track or a tissue or something, which will resolve over time now the varicose vein is gone.

I had my left gsv high ligation done 5days ago and I'm wondering the same thing.. The area over my knee is very pronounced as well and I'd still bulging.. The doctors didn't even tell me to use compression, I'm a bit confused and afraid its not all removed.. At least you're not alone..

Also, I have two incisions on my thigh and one on my groin but no incision below the knee.. It makes me worried some of it is still there but I can't find any info online about this.. Frustrating!

Hi, I guess each case is different (I had one incision in my groin and none in my thigh but 7 from knee to ankle) but I'm a bit surprised they didn't tell you to use compression stockings to help prevent any deep vein thrombosis. Having said that if the main problem area was the thigh then maybe this is less necessary? Maybe you can speak with your local GP to  get his/her opinion?
