I had my surgery on a friday and there were only two of us in over the whole weekend and the Monday.  we had our own rooms and dedicated nurses, it was great, and the consultant and physio came daily, there was also a registrar on the ward all the time.  On the Tuesday it became busy with eighteen admissions and surgery but each still had their own rooms and dedicated nurses.  I was in a private hospital run on behalf of the NHS. If they can get it so right, and, they have never had an infection of any kind, why are they not running the whole NHS, it would be such an improvement!  I am sure that my fast recovery is down to the way I was treated there.

Liz, I don't know if I am totally right here but the private hospital you were in was not run on behalf of NHS but the fact that the NHS hospital

You should have gone into couldn't take you so therefore instead of breaching the 18 week rule they "should" find you an alternative hospital or the hospital  the surgeon does his private work in. So many beds are allocated for overflow nhs patients and the hospital are paid for that bed by the NHS .  In most cases you would have your op in that private hospitaland then be moved to an NHS hospital when a bed became available. You should consider that you were highly fortunate with the care  you received.  Nurses in this country as a who,e are dedicated professionals but they operate on such tight monetary constraints.  I was in NHS hospital in a private room and got good care from the professionals. I think it varies from area to area.  The hospital I was in had 99 percent infection rate.  The NHS do get it right a lot of the time.  These private hospitals are "private" and are funded as such with a top up from the funded NHS beds they provide.

No Susan that is not correct.  I am in the Somerset/Bristol area, and here we have a system called 'Choose and Book.  Instead of sending patient details to a particular hospital, they send them to this single booking unit, who have all your details and then call you to ask where you would like to have the surgery.  I had a choice of my local Hospital (which has a terrible reputation) the new South Mede hospital in Bristol, Bath Royal and several others.  I chose Shepton Mallet treatment Centre, because it has a brilliant reputation, never a single infection, and very very short waiting times with a no cancelation policy, and lots of time with your consultant. It says quite clearly on the bottom of all their paper work that Care UK NHS treatment centres are run by CareUK Clinical Services Ltd on behalf of the NHS.  They do not take private patients.  All the staff were fantastic, the food and choice was amazing, and the back up since leaving has been brilliant.  I am 4weeks plus 6 and already driving, and now walking on the beach, not taking any pain medication, and I am sure, my success is all down to the amazing care and their fast recovery programme.  I cannot praise them enough.cheesygrin

I stand corrected then Liz. You are indeed very fortunate that you got such good care? Good luck to you for the future.
