You should have gone into couldn't take you so therefore instead of breaching the 18 week rule they "should" find you an alternative hospital or the hospital the surgeon does his private work in. So many beds are allocated for overflow nhs patients and the hospital are paid for that bed by the NHS . In most cases you would have your op in that private hospitaland then be moved to an NHS hospital when a bed became available. You should consider that you were highly fortunate with the care you received. Nurses in this country as a who,e are dedicated professionals but they operate on such tight monetary constraints. I was in NHS hospital in a private room and got good care from the professionals. I think it varies from area to area. The hospital I was in had 99 percent infection rate. The NHS do get it right a lot of the time. These private hospitals are "private" and are funded as such with a top up from the funded NHS beds they provide.
