AFter missing 2 periods ive come away from the docs with a diagnosis of graves disease. I dont know alot about it and finding it all very overhelming. Im more concerned that ive been told to hold off trying to conceive for the next 12-18months. This has devastated me as ive been desperate for another child for 2years. Only been trying to conceive since feb this year with no luck. I have a 6 year old boy and am desperatw to complete my family without a huge age gap. Please help....

If you risk getting pregnant your child can be born with graves disease, unless you recieved adequate treatment from your consultant or doctors.  But it seems like they are wait for you to get better.  My be you should discuss with your doctor about wanting a baby so they can put you on the correct medication if possible.

Thanks derek. Ive spoken to the doctor from the endocrine team on friday. This was my first appointment and i only found out i had this last week. The doctor has said to put a hold on trying to conceive for at least 12-18months and when this is under control trying for a baby should come easy. Since reading more about this ive found out that it does not come easy and sometimes not at all for someone who has graves. Thats what im more upset about i just feel like my chancevto have another child is now out of my hands :-( and that just breaks my heart. Has anyone been through this struggle that can tell me more as theres so much to take in but no definate answers x

    Hi,

i have literally just joined this forum to get some advice on graves disease and pregnancy, and I saw your post. I was diagnosed with graves disease following the birth of my first son in 2012. I have been on medication for 18 months now, and my levels got quickly under control with the right medication. I started trying to conceive my second child in June this year (after discussing with the consultant and being put onto safe medication for conceiving). Well I fell pregnant the first month. Please do not feel disheartened by this. I read lots of stuff following my diagnosis that it might take me a while to conceive. I have been extremely lucky. I just didnt stress about it, and thought it will happen when it happens. I was recommended to wait until my levels were under control though, which I did, but as I have said above, this didnt take long. Good luck :-)

Thank you for replying sam. I think reading so many things has frightened me a bit into thinking that ive been fiagnosed with this and thats the end of me having another child. Ive read about so many complications with tryingbto conceive and pregnancy and graves. Ive been recommended to wait by the consultant but when he said 12-18months i broke fown in fromt of him :-( that just seems so far away and my boy is 6 so the sge gap is getting bigger every day :-( do you have other children? I know im luckier than some as im blessed with my boy but im so desperate for another this has just devastated me. Ive spent the night in tears. It just wasnt in our plan xx

    Hi Annemarie

Graves disease is a disease of the thyroid gland. Do you have a swelling in your neck? It can cause you to miss periods and there are other symptoms which you may have experienced such as palpitations, nervouseness, shakey hands, sleep problems etc.,  Your doc has given you this advice as she I guess has referred you to an endocrinologist to get a correct diagnoses in order to prescribe the correct medication and sort out the problem before you become pregnant....best wishes...

Hi lillian, yes i have a slight swelling of the neck. Missed periods made me go to the gp as i thought i may be pregnant and then after blood tests i was referred to endocrine consultant who has said i have overactive thyroid and graves disease. He was the one who has said stop trying until its under control. Reading throuh these forums though im wondering if it will ever be sorted and whether ill ever have another child. I suppose everyone is different and i have to plod along as its early days x

If you are young and considering adding to your family then you should discuss more permanent methods of solving the thyroid. This can include radioactive iodine treatment to burn out your thyroid (still not advised to get preg for 6 months after) or surgery which will remove the thyroid instantly. My consultant gave me same advice and cause I am in 25 with a 3 year old she suggested a permanent method of removing my thyroid would be better.x
