Newbie do need advice

Hi, I’m 43 and have had chest and back pain for years which the DRs have all said is just anxiety. After really pushing to get an examination I’ve just had a gastroscopy and been told I’ve got a sliding hiatus hernia (3cm), Barrett’s at 1cm, and a weak lower oesophageal sphincter. I’m not on any medication at all and not seeing my consultant to discuss the result for a few weeks. I’m worried and after any advice! Thanks!

The wait seems to go on forever but it shouldn't be a problem and the wait time is pretty normal.  There is more of a sense of urgency if there is high grade dysplasia but even with that, it took me over a month to see a specialist.

Thanks Elaine. No one has explained to me anything as to what this means, is this a real problem, should I be taking an meds’ etc. Going to see the gp tomorrow now since all I have is a piece of paper with the diagnosis. Not sure they’ve taken any samples of anything when they did the gastrocopy.

HI Susan, I had an endoscopy a couple of months ago and the consultant said everything was fine which is why im not on meds. It’s also why I’m a bit surprised to see that I now have Barrett’s 2 months later when having a subsequent test for gerd! I’m very confused and anxious now. Going to gp tomorrow to hopefully get some meds.

No one put you on a PPI? My suggestion is to speak with your doc about getting on pantaprozol (sp?) or another med for reflux.

Hi there,   I had upper back pain kinda weird between shoulder blades mostly when lying down through night , A kind of as I explained like An alien inside me and no one believed me. Went for endoscopy and it came back with ulcers in osopheagus hiatus hernia and barrets Was put on high dose of omeprazole and another endoscopy showing ulcers cleared  My dr said barrets can become sinister so I must take ppi for rest of my life and have endoscopy every 3 Year’s . Still have slight pain but not as bad lying down and do worry barrets goes into cancer but I would say You should take Ppi Also have to point out person doing endoscopy said hernia would not cause pain I had but I believe everyone has different symptoms Try not to worry I am 57 btw and female . I have other problems so am not allowed any anaesthetic as it can kill me so dread if barrets gets worse as I don’t know how they would treat it so fingers crossed .... I have to do it with throat spray but it’s over pretty quick and is bearable lol .. hope this helps
