Newbie with concerns

I was diagnosed with PMR three days ago after 6 months of pain and wondering what the hell was going on with my joints and muscles. I couldn't even put my own socks on! This great Doc diagnosed me within 2 mins and I took my first dose of pren this morning (15mg per day). Within 6 hours all my pain has vanished. Such a relief. I know I have to take it for 2 years but that doesn't bother me. I have tried to find out if it will affect my alcohol intake. I can find no advice anywhere. One pharmacist said none and I laughed another said in moderation. As Christmas is approaching guess i will take the second opinion. Is there anything natural I should be taking to help the cure. and also to prevent the Osteoperosis? All advice gratefully accepted.

Hi yes the relief is enormous after first dose..As we speak I have been off Pred a short time now after taking for 2and half years. Still getting aches and a little stiffness in mornings but after all I am 75.Would much rather be off the miracle drug tho. I take A small dose of Paracetamol daily which helps so it wouldn't if it was Pmr.I too had a great Doc who recognized straight away.My ESR was 38 and he told me not to have Alcohol for 12months,which I didn't.I am a lousy drinker and perhaps have a glass of wine with meals out and don't drink at home unless for an occasion. He seemed to relate Alcohol with my Esr reading,it is now 10 and in the Normal range. Good luck you should feel really well on your pills,I was lucky put only 4lbs in weight on and felt well. It's a long journey but when you get to reducing please follow the Slow Reduction that Eileen advises. It really is the best and I thank her for the advice.

As a fellow 'drinker' I think I understand your questions. for the first six months I didn't drink much and was doing well.  I got a bit cocky and started to drink more and boom - major flare and ensuing depression

ive just been put on methotrexate and can't drink at all now - I feel like my only lifeline to feeling normal has been severed.

There is no cure for this.  It comes and goes as it pleases.

Thanks for that. Never been a serious drinker so will have to play it by ear. I seem to have very mild symptons compared to some.

      TVM.

I've never been much of a drinker, although I do enjoy a beer or a glass of wine occasionally.  Been thinking that for the time being I shall have to revert to what I did whilst pregnant - sparkling mineral water.  Every single time I have had alcohol since starting pred I have ended up with a headache, somtimes quite severe.  Think I have finally learned my lesson.rolleyes

Seems that everyone has a different reaction to alcohol whilst on pred so yes, playing it by ear seems the only option!

I wish it it were a cure!

I don't get headaches from red wine - and when I drink I usually have a bottle, not a glass.  Clearly my tolerance is high..... But now I'm on methotrexate I can't fpdrink at all, so my liver might love me more! Lol
