Newby - with severe throat problems

Hi all, I'm new here. I saw a rheumatologist last December who recognised symptoms of SS when he examined me. He sent me away with the promise of sending me some literature to explain the syndrome and said he'd see me in 6 months. Not heard anything since - no literature, no follow-up appointment - so basically I'm battling on my own.

The dry eyes usually get worse through the day , but sometimes I literally cannot open my eyes in the morening as it feels like they're superglued to my eyeballs - I lityerally have to tug on my lashes and lift my eyelids open.

Apart from the tiredness and fatigue I'm just getting on with life as best as I can (I have a few family members with chronic/terminal illnesses who I am helping to care for so I'm kept quite busy!)

I've had the dry mouth scenario for a couple of months but now I've developed a very sore throat - feels like I've got sonething stuck everytime I swallow. My dentist gave me Glandosane saliva spray but it doesn't do much - anyone else have this or suggest any remedy? I couldn't sleep last night for the pain every time I tried to swallow and felt as if I was choking.

Does anyone else have really itchy inner ear problems, too?

So glad to find this forum - I was kind of 'winging' it on my own!

    Hi Sue,

Try biotene mouth gel you can get this on perscription, you could also have thrush done the throat. Is you tongue coated at all? And yes my ears drive me mad with the constant itching. But, I take Claritin once a day and that helps a lot.

    Regards,

Hi Mandy! I will certainly ask about the mouth gel. Will see if it's ok to take Claritin on top of my BP meds and statins - my ears have been driving me mad for weeks, feels like they're full of grit but it's scaly and dry. Did try coconut oil on a cotton bud to soften the skin but it doesn't seem to take the itch away :-/

I've had diminishing muscle/joint ache in the last few weeks but then I've had more trouble with eyes/ears/mouth - or maybe I'm noticing it more because the joint-pain is less ?

      ......but the constant fatigue :-(

So glad to find there are others who understand where I'm coming from - some friends and family think it's all in my head, because I don't 'look' ill!

Thanks for your swift response and advice! :-)

    Hi Sue,

Welcome to our world! The first bit of advice i have is that you have to speak up when you see a doctor. Try to have a plan for treatment before you walk away. Questions like "What do we do now as far as relief for my symptoms?" "When should we follow up?" "Do you have some litature I can take with me today?" You must advocate for yourself...you are the only person who can. Start reading everything you can about SS and treatments for relief, mention possible treatments like Hydroxychloroquine. The more educated you are the more control you have over your treatment. I keep my eye drops and nose spray under my pillow. In the mornings if my eyes are dry I reach for them and drop a few drops in my eyes for relief. My mother puts a little mineral oil on a q-tip and gently rubs it around the outside of her ear not all the way in...I do the same with cortisone cream when I am desperate (small amount). There is no reason you should be "winging" SS on your own after a visit to a doctor. You may want to make another appt.with him... tell them it is for a treatment plan since you didn't get one last time and you are still experiencing problems. I hope you can find some relief, good luck!

I saw the rheumatologist 18/12/2015 & his follow up leter to my GP (also copied to me) suggested he would see me in six months - that's tomorrow and no sign of an appointment. So, Monday I shall have to ring the hispital and ask what's going on!

Have had more support and encouragement from Dentist/Hygeinist thus far!

    Hi Sue

Glad you found this site - I've found it helpful.

About that sore throat: when it gets so bad that we can barely force ourselves to swallow our saliva because of the pain in trying to swallow, it's time to rush back to the doctor. Keep in mind that normal people with those normal and copious amounts of saliva would've long since been to the doc. It can be thrush and or it could be an infection of the vocal cords.

Here in the States one doesn't need a scrip to buy biotene gel. Not every store carries it. I keep some by my bed. If my eyes were that bad regularly, I'd put a small dish with a little water and 2 cotton balls beside the bed also. Then put a damp or wet cotton ball on each eye for up to a minute and you should be able to get your eyes open. With your eyes getting this dry at night, it's a miracle you haven't awakened with a corneal abrasion. I got one when my eyes were no where near as dry as yours. There are some eye gels, too, for use at bed time. Syslane makes one. Since I read in bed I haven't tried these yet.

Personally, I resort to drugs to avoid these extremes of our symptoms. I use evoxac/civemeline and also put drops in my eyes throughout the day. Most of the other drugs make me hyper.

Thanks for the suggestions - I was going to try the cottonwool & boiled water idea for my eyes, so I'll have that ready by my bed tonight!

Hi sue I find a warm flannel over the eyes help as well  I use viscotears preservative free every hour and lacrilube at night if I don't do that routine they become tight sore and itchy and gooey I find the warm flannel a godsend.

I to have had a permanent sore throat and dry mouth and that choking feeling I find like Mandy  biotene gel really good  I also use Biotene mouth wash which is alchohol free I got it from Amazone I haven't tried to see if it's on prescription.

I also have thrush in my mouth which I am on nystatin I have found the soreness and dryness of the throat and that choking feeling has got better since the treatment i had a white coated tounge not like normal thrush cottage cheese that wiped off this wouldn't budge it looks white red and cracked and patches of white here and there I do find the nystatin causes dryness but it's different dryness.

Try chewing sugar free gum  sugar free sweets sips of water sucking on small ice cubes is good avoid anything with alchohol as it drys the mouth more nystatin has alchohol in it in so you may just have to bear with it you can spit the treatment out my GP said.

As for itchy ears you could try a dab of olive oil that very natural your not alone you may feel like it but this is great site with so many lovely people sharing their ideas and problems hope you get tips from us all that can give you some relief .

Go back to your GP or phone out patient rhumatology if your in uk chase it up all the best Jakki x
