Newly diagnosed

Hello,

I'm Mari, a 37 year old woman (pronouns: she/her) recently diagnosed with lichen planus.

I started having symptoms (itchy bumps on forearms and palms) about 10 weeks ago, and became orally symptomatic about 8 weeks ago.

At this point, I have been to my dentist, who has referred me to an oral surgeon for biospy (next week!). I also have vulvar symptoms, so have an appointment with a local urological/gynecological specialist in February.

So far, no treatments have been prescribed. I am also Type 2 diabetic, so my doctor is hesitant to subscribe oral steroids. I have, however, removed irritants as much as possible - switched to unscented, hypoallergenic products, limited foods, etc.

The most difficult part right now is my oral symptoms - my dentist confirmed that it is on every membrane surface in my mouth, and potentially esophageal as well. Even water stings, and my face looks quite swollen during more inflamed periods - I have taken to applying an ice pack to my cheeks sometimes to help with pain and swelling. Thanks to this forum, I have ordered a couple toothpastes (Weleda calendula and Biotene gentle) to try.

Anyway, glad to be here amongst others. My mother has lichen planus as well, but it seems that her symptoms have been a bit different, and she has typically been treated with systemic steroids, which my doctor prefers not to do with me.
