Having just plucked up courage last week to see my doctor she has given me steroid cream for LS so been on this now for 4 days and still have horrendous itch

How long does it take to calm down? I'm early 60s been through menopause about 10 years now I actually sailed through but since end of last year have suffered with dryness and itch I'm actually quite nervous about this condition.

Steroid cream, or ointment?  You need the ointment which is more like vaseline.   Bathing in a bath with bicarbonate of soda in, really helps.

A good moisturiser is a must too.  I do really well with emu oil. But others prefer coconut oil.

Thank you I will try bathing in bicarbonate of soda

It's like a gel doctor prescribed

Where you get your moisturiser from? Can this be used anytime or in between the steroid treatment

      😥

Hi there, You aren't on your own.  Be sure to rub in the ointment for up to a minute and don't be frightened about using it - watch the Dr Goldstein video on this site for lots more and reliable information.  Trust that it will calm the itch.  Great suggestions above too.  Best wishes.

      Thank you for reply

      - when i heard the diagnosis I thought I was alone until a friend told me to join a forum and then realised how many ladies are affected by this. However I was told not to use too much of the cream and to apply in morning and again at night. Seen a lot of posts about borax I hadn't heard of this what you think

I think that opinions are divided on borax - there are lovely women on this site who are having great results using it and that has to count but my consultant was very alarmed by the idea and because I trust her and I've had the best care under her after years of being mistreated, I'm currently holding back from using it.  Do watch the Dr Goldstein video on this site too.  Best, j.

I use borax , my dermatolgist thinks it brilliant stuff which is widely used in her hone country of Latvia.     My gynaecologists are not dismissive, they just say i look fine and different cures suit different people.

Thanks Mary doctor told me I could use Vaseline or sudacrem to moisturise in between morning and night time treatment but not together .

Vaseline is a bad idea, used regularly the petroleum  dries out the skin.  X

I just went to the doctor on Friday and get my results back on Wednesday of this week. I believe I have had LS for over a year but chalked it up to early menopause symptoms and in the lst 2 months have now had lichen Planus. I used my first dose of Clobetasol cream on Saturday night and have taken two benedryl tablets before bedtime both Saturday and Sunday night. The combination has been amazing in getting rid of the painful burning and desire to itch. I was waking myself up itching but i have had sound sleep both nights now. I believe I have both LS and LP from the pictures and symptoms I found online. I already have Ulcerative Colitis so I have found through research that it's not uncommon to have other auto immune diseases too. I have also been wearing only cotton panties and using a soap I found on Amazon called soapberry(an actual berry from Thailand). I bought Vaseline but have not used it yet and will wait until my syptoms and flare have gone.

Sorry to hear you have both as well as colitis. I suffer from thyroid problems since I was 20, it was over active - Graves disease - had partial thyroidectomy in my early twenties all fine until I got to 32 when it flared up and ended up having the rest of thyroid taken away through surgery. However been on thyroxine since then I am also coeliac diagnosed about 10 years ago round about time going through menopause I have read that thyroid and LS are associated together.

Truth be known I am scared of vulva cancers. I have only had my husband as a sexual partner and I feel bad for him as not managed any intimacy since March and that was very sore. As a newly diagnosed LS sufferer I feel very sorry for myself at the minute

      Hi Carrie,

It’s actually best not to use any soap at all.  My itching stopped after I started soaking in a bathtub with 1/3 cup of baking soda. Also, look up the thread on “An Experiment with Borax” for more healing natural remedies. Both the baking soda baths and the borax are godsends.

One last thing, instead of Vaseline, try emu oil or coconut oil.  I tried Vaseline but it didn’t work half as well.

Thanks for the advice Anna! I have been reading that it is not recommended that soap be used so I will research alternative methods for cleansing in the shower. Maybe I could try making a warm water/baking soda combo to rinse in the shower. I don't think i could just use water b/c i would feel too unclean. If it were my shin or forearm I wouldn't think twice about not washing those areas, but my nether regions are in constant contact with sweat, urine, etc. :-(

I won't use the vaseline for that then! I was using liquid vitamin E but thought I was having an allergic reaction to it until I discovered I really had LS & LP. I was also using tampon-soaked coconut oil thinking I had a recurring yeast infection but I will try using it on just my vulva. I have heard that olive oil works really well too.

FYI - I use Aquaphor cleansing wash for bathing and Aquaphor ointment for moisturizing. Both available in the baby dept st Wal Mart. I have vitamin E oil that I apply sometimes.

And twice a week at bedtime I use the Clobetasol.
