Newly fitted Mirena coil... Advice please ladies!

I had a Mirena fitted yesterday to help with menopause symptoms. I suffer with anxietyand was freaking out a bit about how my body would react to it. Was fine last night but now spotting and have a few cramps. What's peoples experience? Because of my health anxiety I'm convincing myself it's going to make me really ill. Should I expect cramps and bleeding in the early days ??

    Hi Anita31460,

I have the Mirena and have had it for over 2 years now and personally I love it! I have had next to no side effects and barely even have a period anymore. I tried the Mirena as I have tried so many different contraceptives but they never work for me. Im allergic to latex so cant do condoms and i got pregnant from the depo injection and got preganant on the pill and tried 6 other pills and bled thru all of them.

So the Mirena has been a godsend for me but the first few months were very rocky to be honest, but im proof that patience paid off. I had cramping, mood swings, uncontrollable bleeding, fatigue etc but then after 2 months it calmed down a bit and by about 5 months i had no symptoms. The only symptoms i get on occassion is really itchy nipples which my doctor doesnt even know if its related but it happens probably every 3 months and i just have to get cream to stop the itching. But to me its nothing considering my fear of getting pregant by accident is totally gone now. I love my 3 girls but just wish they could have been more planned smile

I must also say that before I got the Mirena I did read plenty of forums on it and there are plenty of negatives side effects and horrific stories online but you have to realize its more likely people to want to vent the negatives rather then praise the positives so I have to make sure to add to the positives.

I really do hope the Mirena is working for you, please let me know I would love to hear how it is going for menopause as im still young but would love to know if it helps with that so I know for the future. Just know that everyone needs to find the right contraceptive, Mirena is just not for some people same as other contraceptives that work for others dont work for me.

      Hi Jenny

Thanks for the reply. It is good to hear of your experience. I have had the coil for a month now and have bled every day since it was inserted. I have deep red gelatinous clots when I wee bit it's not really causing a problem. I decided to give it another month to see if things settle down so hearing your experience has reassured me that I'm doing the right thing by persevering. The coil is just part of the battle against peri menopause... Let's hope you have an easier ride through it than I am!

      Thanks again

Hi, I am worried as no period..... I suffered from heavy long periods that made me anaemic and my Gp recommended the Mirena coil. I have tried to get the Mirena fitted on 2 occasions and nurses failed.  They said my cervix had a plug that could not be broken through and needed an operation to fit it. She went on to say that I was naturally protected by this plug and it would have stopped me conceiving.  It is sad as my husband and I have tried for the last year and no luck with pregnancy.  I was 43  you see and I put it down to age not conceiving.  I have had my mirena in for 2 months now  and I bled for the first 4 weeks and a month later had a period which was pleasantly "normal" and not the heavy ones I had before.  I am into the 3rd month of the mirena and I am 11 days late of my period.  My boobs have stayed very sore and veiny and I feel nauseous on and offand my appetite has lessened and I am fussy on food...never have been before.  I had cramping for 2 days when my period was due 11 days ago but nothing...not even spotting.  I have done 2 pregnancy tests and both are negative.  I have had four pregnancies before and the symptoms I have now mimic each pregnancy exactly.  Is this normal for me to experience these symptoms on the Mirena and is it normal for no spotting and for periods to cease so soon? Especailly as I had the worst periods before. I am seeing my GP in 2 days.  I will let you know what my GP says, she is a specialist with Mirena.
