Nexium and IBS

I am curently outside of the UK and unfotunately suffer from IBS. I have seen a local doctor who has prescribed Nexium for my condition, it doesn't seem to work. Nexium is a  (ppi) proton pump inhibitor to supress acid in the stomach and used for ulcers and reflux. Anyone ever been prescribed this medicine for IBS??

Yea but u have to be sure u actually have overproduction of acid, look up long term effects of ppi. Not good. Fodmap diet, cut bock or stop alcohol till it clears. Malox may be better for three days at max dose. Let ur stomach heal.

Thanks very much, that's what I figured. I initally took it for reflux, which went away however I have a feeling the Nexium contributed to IBS, also had lots of stress about a benign cyst, and  a small benign colon polyp, that maybe will be removed in six months Right now full blown IBS. I understand diet is key to recovery and I will try my best to see what suits me now, alcohol no problem, don't need to drink, also have border collie, so I get lots of exercise. Do you have any food recommendations? I try to eat light meals with rice cooked, veggies and fruit like apples, nothing citrus. I stay away from cakes and although I love cheeses I limit myself to a small piece a day.  Best wishes Dd.

Read up on the FODMAP diet, apples I don't apples, pears are a good thing or onions or garlic, red sauce or caffine, ie coffee with its acid content. Follow the FODMAP diet until your stomach heels then reintroduce foods slowly I'm going to look for that liquid acidophilus at that doctors suggest. He obviously knows what he's talking about.

I am  a doctor in the US. This can be fixed. You don't have too much acid. What you have is too little of the protective coatinting in your esophagus called the mucosal lining. This acts like a barrier that protects the tender skin in the esophagus. Often we loose this lining when we have been prescribed medications some of whhich are antibiotics. Many people have replaced it my taking a natural supplement called Liquid Acidophilous--an inexpensive supplement available at health food stores. I have seen many people over a 34 yr period gulp 2-3 mouthfulls several times a day. It sticks to the esophagus & ut grows and stays there. It takes a month or so & these people have been good to go after that. Not needing to do anymore of the liquid. You may want to try it. Good Luck David.

BTW--it has nothing to do with what type of food you are eating as any food requires acid to digest & we WANT acid to go up & down the esophagus----it is a vital part of our digestion & immunity.

Great info thanks, is there any long term effects or any worries about this liquid acidophilus. And to be clear you only use it for about a month or until you heal then you stop using unless you have another bout you would take it again. Sounds good apparently this fixes the problem and and doesn't just put a bandaid on it. So within reason you can go back to eating anything you want. What is your advice on SIBO and leaky gut syndrome, i am low on iron, at 47 a fire/medic and pretty fit, for the past year I've been really low on energy and finally found an internal list that thinks I have leaky gut with possible candida overgrowth and I'm not up taking nutrients that well put me on 100 milligrams of diflucan for 30 days seem to be getting better along with iron supplements. Have had all scans and blood work all normal except iron

Hi David, don't take this medication please take my warning!  I took it and it worsened my immunity leaving me really ill for over a year I picked up every illness going and didn't break the pattern until I cut nexium out, I now take ranitidine which naturally deals with the acid that causes ibs, which can affect me severely some days.  Try something else your doctor is NOT always right!

Thanks Sam. I have heard a lot about PPI's and long term use. I stopped it yesterday and today my tummy feels very hot, I will give it a few days to see if this subsides. Cheers Dd.
