Night cramps helped; questions about self care for a cold

Last night I woke up to go to the loo and my both ankles were painfully cramped. Walking didn't help and I couldn't go back to sleep. I decided to apply a mixture of anti inflammatory oils( helichrysm and arnica), out of desperation. Within 10 minutes pain went away. I bought these on Amazon and used them for tendonitis in the past.
My husband has a cold and I caught it despite my usual preventive avoidance measures. The main symptom is a sore throat; no fever or other aches. Any suggestions based on anyone's experiences? I do saline gargle and sinus irrigation.

Interesting!
My dear OH also gave me a humdinger of a cold over xmas! He'd picked it up at the doctor's surgery when he went to renew his driving licence! If you feel really ill and the sore throat gets worse I'd see the doctor. If I have a cold I do nothing usually - it goes away in the same amount of time. I did have the most peculiar cough that left me gasping and the GP gave me stuff to use in my husband's nebuliser which helped a lot (saline and topical steroid basically I think) but I only used it for a couple of days. I ached in the same way I do when I flare - but the weather was very cold too. I had reduced to 7mg just before and went back to 8mg and that seemed to be enough to improve things. Went back to 7mg and after a week or so I ached again - change of weather, Back to 8mg - and I'll wait for spring to try again I think

I treat sore troat in unusual way. Just before going to sleep, dice fresh garlic and mix it with honey. Spread it on the bread and eat it very slowly. The goal is to coat the troat with the mix. It usually stops the cold spreading from the troat to the rest of the body. It works the best if it is done on the first day of the cold.
My grandmother's recipe.

My father's recipe for colds and sore throats is one part Drambuie, one part whisky, one part blackcurrant juice and top up with hot water. I have discovered you can ignore the hot water and use the microwave! I am sure your grandmother's recipe is much better for you.

I am not sure if your remedy works on cold or just makes you forget that you have one

Think Nick maybe has it cracked! Though his gran's idea of garlic and honey on bread may not be very sociable - though I suppose if you have a cold you don't want to be sociable...

We always joke that one should take garlic before getting sick as it will keep people, and their germs, away from you!
