Night Eating Syndrome?

Posted , 5 users are following.

I wake up every night after about an hour of sleep.  More often than not, I eat something and am able to go back to sleep for the rest of the night. I know this is not healthy and is interfering with my health & fitness goals.  I've tried Melatonin, keeping a sleep diary, going to bed later, etc. The only thing that seems to help is eating something close to bedtime, which defeats the purpose of not eating at night. I'm very frustrated and don't know what to do!

Eating late at night is only going to have negative consequences for for GI tract down the road, e.g., GERD, etc.  You should try to stop.

Try relaxing, taking deep and slow breaths. Try not to think about anything. Drink a cup of water with a spoonful of sugar. The key is to let go off unwanted thoughts. Take a warm(not hot water) shower before going to bad.

In my experience you have to dive deeper and not just try many different approaches.  When you eat late at night or during the night, your blood sugar is going to be a mess.  I am a big fan of the ketogenic diet because you can have stable blood sugar and burn fat for fuel at night, sleep through the night and this perpetuates better blood sugar, better food choices, better metabolism, decreased inflammation, etc..  Also getting your adrenal function checked out because when your blood sugar spikes or drops your adrenals secrete cortisol because it is a stressor and then you eventually develop adrenal fatigue/burnout and also aren't solving the core problem of malfunctioning adrenals and poor blood sugar control.

Maybe you don't get enough food during the day? Try exercising more and watching what you eat so that you feel full enough before going to sleep.

In India billions of people go to bed with full stomach. They eat dinner and go to bed

I forgot to add, stop drinking coffee/tea or any kind of caffeine drinks especially during later half of the day. It really disturbs your sleep cycle, increases your cravings, makes you tired.
