The numbness your experiencing everyone gets you may not get total feeling back there because when they make their incision to go across your knee they are going through very small nerves and I was told about the fact that I may not get all feeling back but most feeling may return but does take a long time to return I massage around my incision area with oil every day to help spread the fluid throughout and to help with my nerves etc not too heavy but not too lightly either need get it feeling the best you can if possible speak to a physiotherapist they can also advise you on how best to get the nerves and feeling back more effectively

Almost 2 years out from op and I have that numb feeling still. I've heard it may stay like that! It's not a big deal though compared to the op itself and recovery. 😘

I am 13.5 months out from TKR on my right knee.  Still numb on the outer side of incision  Guess the nerves can't jump the incision too quickly.  May never get feeling back but no big deal.  Good luck.  Connie

There is no such phrase as "how long" or the word "should" in TKR Land.  They have been stricken from the lexicon.  The actual answers are "as long as it takes" and "no idea", respectively.  In general terms, the recovery takes a year but statistics only apply to populations and NEVER to individuals.  So relying on time frames or other people's cases will have you living in fantasyland...

For MY individual case at 22 months post-op, I can tell you that I have virtually zero symptoms in or around the knee except for some numbness at the incision site (which will probably never go away...I say this because the same is true for the incision where I got my hip replaced 8 years ago...) and some nerve tingling when I kneel on a hard surface (which is why I use foam indoors and knee pads outside).  It may be different for you..."no idea"...

I’ve read before that we shouldn’t kneel with tkr. Anyone else? I do gardening and playing with grandkids. I try not to.

Kneeling is a normal part of life...never heard that it is forbidden.  Source???

At almost 22 months p/o, I still feel nerve sensation when I kneel on a hard surface so I avoid that at all costs.  When I need to do work in the house, I kneel on a 4" foam pad; outside, like for gardening, it's a set of well-padded tactical knee pads.  The "old timers" with long-standing TKRs say the sensation gradually fades...we'll see.  Can't harm the knee...it's metal!!!

The only forbidden activities that I've ever found revolve around pounding (running, jogging, competitive sports, etc.) and torquing (twisting) the knee.  Here's a common list...

I kneel with no problems, on my TKR. I started practicing early on...love yoga, and need to kneel for my work. I always kneel on both knees, so not to put too much pressure on just one.

I was wondering the same thing this morning.  My right side of knee is absolutely numb and I am now five and a half months after the TKR.  I think it can take up to a year, but it doesn't affect my walking, or bending, at all.

I still have numbness around the outside of my right knee, extending to my calf. I am 14 months po.

As it is over a year I do not expect any improvement now. It's a small thing, the knee works well, I can do what I need. I just ignore it.

    Happy New Year

The numbness will continue to decrease over time but never totally go away.  I'm almost 22 months but also had a hip replaced 9 years ago.  There's still a slight bit of numbness along that incision line.  Nerves were severed...they will never completely heal but the annoying numbness will fade in time.
