Nightmares with Trazodone?

I experienced severe trauma in my childhood (physical and mental from parent). From age 7, I had horrible nightmares that would wake me. The nightmares always left me terrified and crying, even in adulthood. Over the years, I have been dx'd with anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

I was prescribed Prozac 40mg about 15 years ago, I think. The first night I took it, the nightmares ended immediately, as did my insomnia. I still dream, but they are not nightmares. Which is a huge relief. I stopped shaking every time I speak with someone I didnt know. Major plus! No more shaking like a junkie having DTs when speaking to a cashier at the grocery store checkout.

About a year ago, I began to have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. My Dr increased my prozac to 60mg. After a year, my difficulties sleeping did not improve. After talking to my dr a couple of weeks ago, she prescribed trazodone 50mg to take at bedtime. I still am taking the prozac, too.

I have only taken the trazodone a few times, but I had nightmares for the first tine in ages. These nightmares involve someone or something attacking me, and I feel like I am experiencing pain during the attacks. Of course, when I wake up, I'm perfectly healthy, no injuries... I know it's just a nightmare.

I don't want to continue taking the trazodone. I began reading about drug interactions with my meds and found there are potential contraindications.

Does anyone else have success with a different med or supplement for sleep, that's safe to take with prozac?

Thank you!
