No meat and still having flare ups

Posted , 8 users are following.

I am a Vietnam Veteran and dealt with plenty injuries but this gout is starting to take the blue ribbon. I wasn't a heavy meat eater unless at a cook out. But last 6 months the Allopurinol at 200mg no longer is helping. VA medical staff doubt I'm suffering gout because it attacks my upper spine, hands and ankle. Then big toe. Even with my uric acid levels between 6.0 to 8.0 I'm still getting horrid flare ups.

The doctor swares up and down I cant be having an attack in the spine.

Ive since stopped eating meat. and also having difficulty eating beans, soy milk.

I am running out of ideas to treat this. Cherry juice and valarian root isn't helping.

Hi, i have been recommended to try apple cider vinager, two teaspoons in water, daily. My understanding is the vinager alkalines the uric acid dissolving it within the body before it has chance to stick to your joints. This is unconfined as yet as I have only just ordered the vinager however it does make sense. Good luck, Jason.

A classic article, published in the "American Journal of Public Health," discussed the concept of acid- and alkali-forming food. The article noted that your body is very good at regulating its acidity level, so the foods you eat aren't going to affect your blood acidity level as long as you're healthy. You'd need to consume quite a bit of apple cider vinegar to affect your body's acid-base balance.A study published in the "Journal of Medicinal Food" in March 2008 found that people who consumed straight vinegar had increases in the acidity of their urine, while those who consumed pickles, which contained about half the acetic acid of straight vinegar, experienced a slight decrease in the acidity of their urine. Thus, a small amount of apple cider vinegar might not increase the acidity levels of your urine, but consuming a lot of vinegar might make your urine more acidic.

f you do drink apple cider vinegar, mix it with a less acidic beverage and rinse your mouth afterward. Otherwise, the acidity of the drink may cause damage to your teeth or esophagus. Some people have also experienced decreases in their potassium levels when consuming apple cider vinegar regularly in medicinal amounts. This could cause your bones to become weaker and increase your risk for osteoporosis.

I am not so sure the acidity in your urine is relevant here as surely at that point your body would have digested it? What i do know is the person who told me about this tried it eight months ago and hasnt had an attack - this after he had a bad few episodes of gout sometimes monthly. I think providing it is diluted then it is worth a try...

Hi..I tried the apple cider vinegar with water, im now suffering with arthritis pain all over my body. I'm depleted my potassium & calcium. I told the chiropractor who suggested it that his remedy is definitely not for everyone. I only took it once and immediately, an hour later, my body started cramping up, & now I feel I have arthritis all over my joints. This is not good for people with gout.

Ecc- Sorry to hear about your problem, going thru gout attack right now.  I've tried this: 1 teaspoon baking soda, squeeze half or more lemon into 8 oz of water, stir, drink.  Two or three times a day.  Worked for me once, using it again on new attack from yesteraday, seems to be helping.  It'll fizz and may want to be near bathroom but has worked for me.  Good luck.

      Lemon juice ph 3

      Baking soda ph 9

Mix them together and they have neutralised each other before they even get into your mouth.

Most gout attacks spontaneously resolve. Because you consumed tea / fruit cake / a kipper / papaya / or went to see Mickey Mouse at the local cinema the day before the attavk resolved, doesn't mean that those actions were what resolved the attack.

    Could it be pseudogout? ...

I am suffering horrendously with my knee, which flares up every 6/8 weeks ... Despite the daily Allopurinol 300mg, despite cutting out red meat and alcohol all of which I do to avoid regular gout ...

It is only today that I am really considering that my knee issue isn't gout, but something slightly different ...

I am thinking of going back to my doctor and specifically questioning the possibility of pseudogout.

Add colchicine to the 300mg ur taking. I was just like u cut out meat no booze. Except my attacks lasted 40 to 60 days. I was on 300 mg. Here comes the part folks will say I'm wrong but it works. I was sitting at a bar on the beach in Aruba in May. A guy over heard me order water. Water is huge with gout. The guy said Water!. I told him I had gout and at the time my uric acid was 8.5. He said this is what u do. Take colchicine at the first sign. He said take 3 at once wait a hr take another. You will get the s***s. But in 24 hrs the gout will be gone. He gave me 6 pills I did what he said. This was 10 am. By 10 pm my limp was gone by morning no gout. In fact my acid level was 3.2. I was on vacation and would try anything. I saw the guy the next morning at the buffet I told him thanks. He gave me 6 more pills he said to take1eachday with the 300 mg I was taking. I ate meat and drank enough for 5 guys the rest of my trip. I got home told my Dr. And I take 1 colchicine and 300 mg allopurinol a day been gout free ever since. TRUE STORY.

The gold standard to know if you have gout and/or pseudogout would be to have a joint aspirated and have a look at the crystals.

Pseudogout is generally associated with age - more like 70 or 80 than 40 or 50.

Second, you are taking 300mg of allopurinol but is that controlling the level of blood urate? You need the blood urate to be down to about 3. You are still less than 50% of the maximum dose.

Finally allopurinol will cause gout flares in the first year or so as you are cleared out of monosodium urate deposits.

If you are living somewhere hot you need to drink loads of water.

Thanks for your help and advice with this ... as yet I don't know ... but on my next hospital visit I can ask a specific question about my blood urate level.

The regime you suggest will certainly give many people diareaha, and we must remember that colchicine is toxic and shouldn't be abused.

I personally find simply 1 colchicine taken *at the first twinge* will stop an attack, and another every 12 hours if there is anything still hanging around. 9/10 times I only need the first tablet... and water.

Alcohol will also make gout worse. For many reasons apart from gout, it should be taken in moderation. Gout is mostly a problem of the kidney, and alcohol makes the kidneys work harder.

    Hi Eccentrick,

Hey, I have a suggestion for you.  It's not particularly good news, but at least you'll see what's going on.  Just start looking at "pseudo-gout".

It can happen anywhere, in fact that's part of the diagnosis process, that it happens where gout usually does not.

And it's not even caused by meat.  In fact, nobody is quite sure what causes it.

And worst of all, there's no real treatment except for generic anti-inflammatories and pain killers.  They sometimes use colchicine, but there's no particular reason to use that instead of other stuff.

It sure feels like gout, let me tell you, cuz now I've had both.

    Good luck,

    J.
